Custom Scope
Utilizing a theoretical understanding of career development, advises students/alumni on a full range of career processes, including individual or group advising/coaching, career planning, setting career goals, decision making, and improving job search competencies. Provides a holistic approach to student/alumni career counseling, modifies workshops and presentations as necessary; OR maintains relationships with potential employers, school admissions representatives, and other organizations to establish contacts to meet the career needs of students. Performs independently, but may receive guidance in developing new career advising/coaching services and Counsels undergraduate and graduate students and alumni on career options and opportunities, including customized services for specific populations.

Department Custom Scope
The Career Development Specialist will advise medical students on a full range of career exploration and development plans for medical specialty selection or alternate career plans, including group advising/coaching, career planning, setting career goals, decision making, and tools to support specialty selection competencies. Creates and modifies workshops and presentations as necessary for student career development. Trains and maintains relationships with faculty advisors and mentors for Careers in Medicine Programs. Refines and develops new career and medical specialty advising/coaching services and counsels medical students and alumni on career options and opportunities. Provides staff support and guidance for the Medical Student Counsel and Medical Student Interest Groups. Collaborates with faculty across campus for summer research and externship opportunities for medical students. Works with the Student Affairs team to help organize and carry out major events and activities such as Residency Match, SOAP, Recruitment Day, Orientation Week, graduation ceremonies and various Medical Student Life events.

Helps clients identify their interests, values, skills, and personalities, and understand how these factors relate to academic/career satisfaction and choices.
  • Oversees career advising for first and second year medical students for the UCR School of Medicine, including individual and group advising sessions for medical students on various UCRSOM, regional, AAMC, and other career advising tools and resources for medical specialty selection and to evaluate specialty selection. Refers students to extracurricular groups and activities that align with students career interests. Collaborate with the Director of Scholarly activities to assist with the Summer Research and Clinical Externship Program. Provides career advising and residency support to third year medical students in collaboration with the Residency Development Specialist and helps coordinate the handoff to the Residency Development Specialist in January of the third year to support the residency application process.

Counsels undergraduate and graduate students and alumni on career options and opportunities, including customized services for specific populations.
  • Provides advice to prospective, new and continuing medical students on career development and student support services. Monitors compliance of required activities and makes referrals to Student Affairs leadership as appropriate. Counsels medical students in exploring their fit for different specialties and accurately assess their competitiveness for their selected specialties locally, regionally and nationally using established metrics in collaboration with the Residency Development Specialist. Serves on the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) Committee and provides support during the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) for unmatched students. Supports the management of the Office of Career and Residency Advising budget. Interprets and communicates UCR and UCRSOM policies, procedures and guidelines.

Provides guidance to departments/colleges/schools on providing resources to meet students' career needs.
  • Oversees the Faculty Career Advisors program by recruiting and training Faculty Career Advisors and providing guidance and resources to the Faculty Career Advisors and Specialty Interest Group Advisors for proper advising on medical specialty selection, residency applications, constructing 4th year clerkship rotation schedule, USMLE examination timelines, and student interest group activities. Tracks the touchpoints, activities, and engagement of faculty career advisors with medical students. Engages with SOM Department Chairs to identify additional advisors, mentors, and support for medical student career development. Collaborates with the Residency Development Specialist to coordinate Faculty Career Advising in coordinating residency applications and 4th year schedule support.

Modifies and conducts workshops and presents programs to meet the needs of students and staff.
  • Responsible for developing programs and workshops including individual and group sessions, workshops related to career development and specialty selection for first and second year medical students (e.g., Physician Mentor Dinner, Speed Mentoring, Special Lectures, Specialty Round Tables, CV workshops, and 3rd year medical student advising series in collaboration with Residency Development Advisor). Responsible for managing, monitoring and evaluating programs for first and second year medical students related to career advising and developing interventions and improvements based on program evaluation feedback, AAMC Year 2 and GQ survey data, and internal quality improvement surveys; Maintains confidentiality of interactions with students. Collaborates with the Residency Development Specialist to evaluate programs for third year medical students and provide recommendations for improvement and develops and facilitates workshops for third year medical students

Uses standard quantitative and qualitative assessments to help clients assess career goals.
  • Tracks student specialty interest and ultimate career choice during medical school. Reviews and advises students on results for AAMC career assessments. Creates and disseminates career inventory surveys for students to report career interests and goals. Evaluates assessments and surveys to determine need for new career development programs and services, as well as changes to existing programs. Interprets and presents on national reports from NRMP, AAMC, and other National Organizations regarding Medical Specialty information.

Helps with decision making, goal setting, action planning, and identifying internal/external obstacles to obtaining goals.
  • Advises first, second, and third year medical students on setting personal and professional goals to align with specialty interests to improve students competitive eligibility for residency. Makes recommendations to medical students in action planning to achieve career planning goals. Supports students in reflection of personal obstacles and barriers to determine proper action planning.

Researches, evaluates, and updates written and electronic career and educational resources.
  • Develop content and disseminate UCRSOM Office of Career and Residency Advising (OCRA) Monthly Newsletter to medical students and faculty career advisors; develop and disseminate Career and Residency Advising resources for students and faculty career advisors in collaboration with the Residency Development Specialist; Assist with maintaining the OCRA website and intranet OCRA CANVAS page as a central resource for medical students that includes resources, recordings, and surveys

Researches and organizes economic and employment trend data, and designs materials for presentation to students and organization professionals.
  • Researches current trends, research, and local, regional, and national reports in order to develop presentations and reports for students and faculty career advisors for competitive eligibility for residency in collaboration with the Residency Development Specialist. Participates in the AAMC Careers in Medicine program and the Group on Student Affairs to learn about promising practices from the field and the latest trends for other medical schools.

  • Maintains relationships with Residency Program Directors and Residency Program Administrators at and outside of UCR SOM to enhance resources and advising for medical student career development in collaboration with the Residency Development Specialist. Attends meetings with advisors at affiliated clinical sites to discuss partnerships and opportunities for current medical students. Maintains relationship with local medical societies for medical student mentoring opportunities.
