Custom Scope
Using knowledge and skills as a seasoned, experienced professional in the disabilities field, deals with a wide range of accommodation issues related to the specialty assigned. For complex issues consults with the organization expert of that disability within disabled students program. Decisions can impact University compliance and liability under federal and state disability law and regulations.

Department Custom Scope
The Student Disability Resources Center provides services for students with various permanent or temporary disabilities. These disabilities may include: learning disabilities; attention deficit disorder; autism, visual, mobility, or hearing impairments; psychological disabilities; chronic systemic disorders (e.g., lupus, Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, diabetes); fractures, strains, or stress injuries. The Disability Specialist interprets medical documentation to recommend and facilitate reasonable accommodations for students with learning, psychological, neurological, and other disabilities to ensure their access to the educational opportunities of the University of California, Riverside. The Specialist works with individual students to determine eligibility for disability-related accommodations and services, providing appropriate follow-up and disability-related counseling. They serve as the campus resource specialist in the development of accommodations and academic adjustments for this population, providing on-going consultation and problem-solving assistance to faculty and staff.

Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Required
PhD or PsyD in clinical or counseling psychology or related field, or a Master's degree in counseling psychology (or related field) and two years of experience as a professional psychologist. Preferred

Experience conducting neuropsychological assessments or learning disability assessments. Preferred
Experience in disability management and or crisis management with adults with disabilities. Preferred
Experience in interpreting psycho-educational reports and neuropsychiatric reports, and ability to apply this information for determination of appropriate disability accommodations. Required
Experience working at a higher education research institution. Preferred

Key Responsibilities

Specializes in a specific disability to determine eligibility, accommodations, and intervention techniques required for individual students.
  • Develops creative and effective accommodation strategies for students with complex needs. Strategies may include use of adaptive or other appropriate software tools. Upon self-referral or referral by staff/faculty, screens students for a learning disability (LD), Attention Deficit or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), chronic health conditions, or other disorders that could affect learning, and refers student to appropriate professional.

Interprets documentation of student's disabilities provided by physician, psychologist, or other appropriate professionals to determine eligibility for disability services.
  • Evaluates and interprets psychological and psycho-educational assessments to determine whether a student's impairment meets criteria for disability-related accommodations. Draws inference from assessments in order to develop a comprehensive plan of services, and may consult with or refer to clinician for additional documentation.

Develops and facilitates curriculum, learning outcomes, supervision of peer support program(s) for the benefit of students with disabilities. Advises on peer program development theories supports, problem solving, program planning, budget strategies, and campus policies and procedures

Conducts individual assessment to determine appropriate academic accommodations and auxiliary services.
  • Responsible for reviewing documentation of disability for incoming and continuing students who have been diagnosed as having learning disabilities, ADHD, other neurological dysfunctions, psychological/psychiatric disabilities, chronic health disabilities, or complex medical conditions, in order to identify appropriate accommodations and support services as required by federal/state law and University policy. Provides orientation to new students, and referrals when appropriate.

Offers guidance and instruction regarding compensatory strategies and techniques to ensure students' access to the academic environment.
  • Provides disability management counseling to students with a wide range of disabilities. Assists students in formulating strategies and developing alternate approaches to problem solving, in understanding their disabilities and their rights and responsibilities. Provides crisis assistance, mediation, referrals, and consults with on- and off- campus care providers regarding individual circumstances.

Discusses accommodation needs with professors, including course requirements.
  • Provides consultation to faculty, academic departments and colleges/schools, so they may provide reasonable accommodations to students while maintaining University academic standards. Facilitates communication between faculty or staff and enrolled students with various disabilities on access and accommodation issues, and provides on-going consultation and problem-solving assistance.

Thoroughly documents bases for individual assessments in accommodation decisions.
  • Creates, organizes, and maintains up-to-date student records, to the industry standard. Composes reports and correspondence. Maintains strict confidentiality in verbal and written communication.

Works in cooperation with campus partners to develop new approaches or refine existing systems to meet the needs of students with complex disability needs.

Develops presentations, and participates in programs for the benefit of students with disabilities and the campus community, promoting awareness, sensitivity, and competence in ensuring access for people with disabilities. Assists with arranging special events and projects as required. Participation in outreach events aimed for new and continuing students, academic and student life organizations. Contributes to division and campus initiatives and activities.
