Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Work is performed independently under general consultative leadership.

Department Custom Scope
The Maker Services Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Creat'R Lab, a maker space located in the Orbach Science Library. The Coordinator assists Creat?R Lab patrons, supervises student employees, implements and maintains specialized equipment, and facilitates outreach activities such as meetups and workshops for students and faculty. The Coordinator maintains a high level of technical expertise and knowledge on Maker Space equipment including 3D printers. The Maker Services Coordinator maintains partnerships with colleagues in Research Services and other library departments to collaborate on plans for the acquisition and implementation of new equipment and services in the lab. This position is designated as a Mandated Reporter and will be required to complete trainings and comply with CANRA. Must pass FBI/Department of Justice background check.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Reference and Instruction: Serves at a reference desk or general public service desk providing full range of services to patrons using library resources and other information resources in a wide range of formats, languages, and disciplines; develops standard educational activities and assessments of basic student library skills.
  • Applies reference and instruction concepts to perform in day-to-day operation of services for the Creat'R Lab, a collaborative maker space in the Orbach Science Library that features a variety of tools and technologies to further innovation and knowledge creation. Provides student-led service oversight to patrons, including consultations, equipment troubleshooting, and workshops. The incumbent will also research and recommend new and emerging types of maker support for the Library. Responsible for oversight of a full range of services to patrons, including consultation on maker space services, technologies, and equipment. Provides operational support for the 3D printing service. Proactively provides ideas and potential collaborative opportunities for partnerships with staff, students, faculty and academic units on campus. Oversees a robust program of educational activities by coordinating the efforts of the Innovative Media librarian, student employees, student clubs, and other Creat'R Lab partners. Collaborates with library and campus partners in shared programming and outreach. Participates in and coordinates special events, including Maker Week, hackathons, etc. Develops maker space budgets in partnership with the Director of Research Services and the Innovate Media Librarian. Supports and coordinates Creat'R Lab tour and orientation requests. Ensures that the Creat'R Lab is an inclusive, welcoming, and interdisciplinary space. Uses knowledge of different types of maker space technologies to fulfill faculty and student research needs. Maintains equipment inventory, and suggests new equipment purchases to meet user needs. Troubleshoots equipment and works to identify an appropriate resolution.

May lead a team of staff library professionals and/or assistants.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating Creat?R Lab student employees, including those who specialize in maker technologies and methods (for example, a student electronic specialist). Trains student employees in use of Creat'R Lab equipment, including, but not limited to: 3D scanners and printers, a high-end laser cutter, electronics and circuits, sewing machines, and virtual reality technologies.

Analyzes, evaluates, interprets and revises or proposes revisions to established operational guidelines within scope of assigned responsibilities.
  • Serve as member of the Creat'R Lab Steering Committee, a cross-campus working group consisting of faculty, library staff, and student members. Documents and regularly reviews Creat'R Lab policies to ensure that they are up to date. Ensures that maker space statistics are tracked, analyzed, and used to aid in continuous improvement of maker services. Maintains knowledge of current industry trends and performs continuous assessment of innovative methodologies, technologies and approaches. Identifies opportunities for improvement and communicates them to Library leadership.
