Custom Scope
Advanced leader for large, complex and diverse non-credited recreational or sports program(s), including responsibility for programmatic and budget oversight and planning. Regularly works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Typically leads or supervises other staff or students.

Department Custom Scope
Reporting to the Associate Director, Programs, the Assistant Director, Competitive Sports will be responsible for the overall direction and management of the Competitive Sports Program portfolio which includes the Intramural Sports and the Club Sports programs. Responsibilities include, but not limited to program design, development and implementation, risk management, budget preparation and management, facilities usage coordination, staff training, leadership development, sports clinics, record keeping and marketing and promotion of the program. Responsible for staying on the leading edge of the industry standard and trends in order to offer the highest quality competitive sports program. Advise and guide Student Clubs under the Recreation Department with their practices, coaches, tournaments and travel following all university and National guidelines, policies, and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Develops, schedules and makes programmatic and budget recommendations for highly diverse and complex programs and events. Performs short and long term planning for recreational program(s) and/or activities.
  • Develop, direct, manage and implement a broad based Competitive Sports Program. Develop and plan new sports, activities and programs based on the students' interests and trends. Guide, direct and serve as a liaison between the clubs, university and national governing associations for each club. Makes recommendations for current and future needs for the program.

Selects, trains, evaluates, and supervises professional level staff.

Has overall responsibility for equipment, facilities and budget for a large operational program. Coordinates all facility usage.
  • Monitors facility usage to ensure proper maintenance and care of all venues by participants and to prevent damage and excessive wear and tear. Work closely with City Recreation and Parks Department for use of shared facility.

Selects, supervises and evaluates student employees, student officials and referees. Assists in development and implementation of comprehensive student employee training program.
  • Provides ongoing training and development of student employees working in Competitive Sports. Encourage and support professional development opportunities for student staff including training programs, professional association involvement, research, conferences, and individual mentoring. Participate on various committees within and outside of UCR.

Coordinates a variety of social, cultural, recreational and physical activities that are offered on a short-term or intermittent basis.

Proposes updates/revisions to standard operating procedures and guidelines. Conducts periodic reviews of historical and statistical records and standings.

Maintains a supportive environment for program participants and facilitates involvement.

Enforces program policies and procedures. Conducts ongoing evaluation of recreational programs to ensure compliance with university and program objectives.

Coordinates professional and student staff to develop and implement publicity and promotional programs. Supports design, maintenance and ongoing use of comprehensive website for all program participants.
  • Works with the Marketing Team to promote the program through websites, social media, print and word of mouth.

Researches, develops and implements activity-specific risk management guidelines for all programs.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive risk management program to ensure the safety of the all participants and to minimize the risk exposure of the department and campus.

As the department's technical leader, regularly provides guidance to others regarding the program's specifics, events and/or activities.
