Custom Scope
Using knowledge and skills as a seasoned, experienced Student Services professional, performs the full range of duties and responsibilities within a Student Life specialization. Assesses situations and determines appropriate action or referral. Works independently under general supervision to provide information and interpretation of complex policies, procedures and regulations. Identifies and responds to student needs for programs, services, and crisis intervention.

Department Custom Scope
The Coordinator for New Student Programs will provide direction, guidance, and support to the Highlander Orientation and New Student Programs in the Student Life Office. Highlander Orientation for first-year students consists of up to 13 two-day sessions during July-August and up to 7 one-day sessions for transfer students in September and December. These are mandated orientation programs for all undergraduate students. New Student Programs include a First-Year Mentor Program and additional targeted programs for transfer and commuter students. The Coordinator will oversee various aspects of the Highlander orientation program, which may include the implementation of the student, or family orientation program, provide guidance and support for the recruitment, selection, and training of the student orientation staff. This position will also support general Student Life functions and events as needed. This position will support the Student Life office's mission, vision, and strategic plan.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Manages a large a student services business or multiple services. Recommends new business opportunities. Participates in long range planning and development and new initiatives.
  • Provide significant assistance and support in the overall management and coordination of the Orientation program. Research, design, market, and assist with the execution of an annual program that meets the needs of UCR's diverse first-year and transfer students. Assist with the review and analysis of evaluations received from attendees. Assist with logistical functions including facility scheduling through Academic Scheduling, Highlander Union Building and departmental space (as needed), Facilities Services, and media resources requests. Oversees the registration process of student and families with the orientation program. Ensure compliance with university policies and regulations, including FERPA. Assist with other program components as assigned.

Provides ongoing transformational advising and development to student leaders participating in student government, co-curricular programs and/or organizations on a wide range of issues. Advises student leaders on complex and sensitive issues. Brings extensive knowledge to a student generated field of interest and supports, guides and mentors students in formulating projects related to those issues. Guides students in interaction with campus leaders and represents students on these issues when appropriate. Coaches student leaders on communication and leadership skills.
  • Oversees a year-long First Year Mentor Program upwards of 50 student mentors and over 200 mentees. Develops the training and curriculum for the program to meet the ever-changing needs of the new students.

Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external organization stakeholders critical to program success.
  • Maintain and enhance relationships with various campus partners to implement the Highlander Orientation Program and New Student Programs. Participates in the Highlander Orientation workgroup and serves as a liaison to the academic departments and all other campus partners. Serves as the primary liaison between New Student Programs and a majority of campus and community partners pertaining to the family/Spanish family orientation program. Serves as the liaison to campus partners pertaining to annual yield events.
