Custom Scope
Applies knowledge about curriculum, requirements and educational activities to coordinate professional health education programs. Coordinates and maintains program operations, which may include teaching and learning activities, program curriculum, learner scheduling, maintaining databases, tracking learner compliance, and program accreditation.

Department Custom Scope
The Senior Standardized Patient Educator (Sr SPE) provides clinical, educational and technical expertise in the development, implementation and evaluation of simulation based activities involving human and hybrid simulation at the Center for Simulated Patient Care (CSPC). The Sr SPE serves as a resource and role model to the SPE and SP team; develops training materials and resources; coordinates, manages and supports CSPC events; maintains ongoing professional development of knowledge and skills by attending and participating in meetings, workshops, seminars, reviewing published literature and contributing to state consortium activities. The Sr SPE will perform other work-related duties as assigned by the Standardized Patient Program Supervisor. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the Supervisor assigning duties logically related to the position. The Sr SPE applies knowledge and expertise about curriculum, requirements and educational activities to lead projects related to program operations at the School of Medicine CSPC. Projects will be agreed on by the Supervisor and Sr SPE according to the Sr SPE strengths and the needs of the CSPC, which may include teaching and learning activities, program curriculum, SP scheduling, software/databases, tracking learner compliance and program accreditation elements.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Works with program managers and/or faculty to meet the educational needs of program learners through collaborative development and implementation of programmatic activities, which may include program competencies, curriculum, and exams.
  • Responsible for the training and quality assurance of Standardized Patients (SPs). Ensures that the training provided to SPs by all SPEs meets the specific needs of the curriculum and follows best practice in adult learning principles, educational theory and standardized patient methodology. Responsible for program quality assurance, ensuring SPs are authentic, standardized, and accurate.

Plans, executes the logistics, and monitors budgets for program social events and/or educational activities, which may include recruitment; orientation; graduation; conferences; and simulation and/or other assessment activities. May lead workshops and/or information sessions for learners, faculty, and staff.
  • Supports and assists in the development, implementation, monitoring, and enhancement of formative and summative events for the Center for Simulated Patient Care (CSPC).

Collaborates with program faculty and leadership to develop learner assessment documentation; including assessment tools and assessment strategies/timelines. Implements learner assessment strategies and ensure compliance with deadlines. Analyzes learner performance, curriculum effectiveness, and impact of rotation experience and other educational activities. Provides summary reports of evaluations to program leadership.
  • Works closely in a collaborative relationship with SPs, faculty, learners, staff, and SOM/CSPC leadership in the teaching, assessing and remediation of clinical skills. Develops SPE and SP training materials and resources.

Manages operational components of the program specific to the employment of learners which may include human resources onboarding; appointment paperwork; credentialing; managing training grants; payroll management (FTE tracking); benefits and leave advising; and Medicare reimbursement reporting.
  • Screen Standardized Patients applications, interview candidates and make recommendations for hire. Recruits, hires, and trains SPs. Train and assign work to new and continuing SPs. Provide guidance on performance standards and University procedures to SPs and SPEs. Conduct SP performance evaluations in collaboration with SPEs, including ongoing communication of feedback with SPs.

Manages program files and data, which may include individual learner files as well as program accreditation documentation in accordance with relevant regulatory and University policies. Creates reports to ensure accuracy and completeness of data.

Monitors learner files as well as program documentation and policy to ensure compliance with established and evolving standards. Develops and maintains program processes for documentation to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Implements, enforces and maintains CSPC policies, procedures and guidelines that meet institutional goals and standards.

Serves as point person for learners, which may include prospective health professions education program candidates; current health professions education learners; and all other stakeholders. Answers questions and disseminates program information. Resolves ad hoc issues relative to program learners. Advises learners on planning, initiation, and completion of their studies. Communicates clinical learning opportunities and curriculum requirements and effectively communicates information about learners' program choices.

Analyzes the user experience of educational technologies to optimize the teaching and learning environment. Capitalizes on opportunities to more efficiently and effectively administer educational software and platforms. Seeks solutions to enhance the user experience.
  • Optimizes the use of software and other technologies in the CSPC for the SP and student experience and data reporting.

Analyzes a wide range of educational issues and applies project management principles and practices to achieve results in academic setting. May work with matrixed teams of professionals and key stakeholders to deliver effective results.
  • Collaborates in the development, editing and maintenance of SP cases/scenarios by providing SP feedback from training to the SP Program Supervisor.
