Custom Scope
Utilizing advanced, specialized expertise provides direction and guidance to lower level Student Services professionals in specialized student life and development programs, and resolves the most complex cases/situations; and/or has programmatic responsibility for a discreet complex Student Life & Development function or content area.

Department Custom Scope
Under the general direction of the Associate Director for Residential Life, the Assistant Director for Leadership and Engagement is responsible for the development and assessment of social and educational programming in all residential facilities. The AD is responsible for the implementation and management of cultural, educational, social and academic programs with an emphasis on programming that serves to enhance understanding and respect for the residential and Highlander community. This position serves as a resource for the residential students and campus partners and supervises the Residential Life Program Advisors (PAs) student staff team (approximately 30). Additionally, this position serves as the Executive Advisor to the Housing student organizations including but not limited to Residence Hall Association, National Residence Hall Honorary and Campus Apartment Resident Association.

Key Responsibilities

Administers comprehensive student program(s) and/or administers comprehensive programs in the residence halls.
  • Implements a wide variety of events, activities and programs with a broad appeal to the residential student population. Assists with the coordination of the Residential Host program. Directs the yearly resident Welcome Week and assists supervisor with coordination of academic support programs in residential communities.

Manages a program of providing counseling, guidance and development to student leaders or student government. Oversee(s) a program(s) and service(s) of diverse complexity and scope.
  • Serves as Executive Advisor to the housing student organizations of Residence Hall Association, National Residence Hall Honorary and Campus Apartment Resident Association. Attends regional and national student housing conferences. Empower students to excel by providing development opportunities within their roles and responsibilities as it pertains to residential life.

May supervise clerical and/or student staff.
  • Supervises the student Sr. Program Advisors, Program Advisors and Assistant Resident Director for Leadership. Travel to student leadership development conferences such as PACURH, NACURH, No Frills, etc

Independently resolves the most complex individual cases regarding student affairs or student life issues.
  • Participate in an elevated on-call emergency response rotation with other members of Residential Life Leadership Team. Serve as a departmental lead in major crisis/emergencies.

May provide strategic vision and oversight on development of program design and applicability. Measures, assesses, and evaluates programs and staff.
  • Articulate a vision and goals for student learning and development within large scale programming and other initiatives. Develop specific learning outcomes for large scale programming and other initiatives. Build effective assessment tools to determine learning outcomes for the large-scale programming and other initiatives administered by position.

Oversees multiple business services and may supervise business coordinators. Defines criteria for service and assesses risk/benefit, balances financial and cost considerations against the degree of students served. Provides guidance for new services and advises students on development of business plans. Responsible for long range planning and development and new initiatives.
  • Maintains and analyzes program budget for large-scale events, residential programs and welcome week; manages performance agreement process for speakers and performers. Manages and Advises the Student Leadership Organizations budgets (RHA, NRHH, CARA)

Develops and maintains complex or sensitive relationships with external organizations critical to program success. Represents the organizations to UC, the local community, and other relevant audiences.
  • Collaborate with Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and other administrative units in creating meaningful residential activities. Attends UC Residential Educators or other meetings and developments pertaining to building robust student activities in residential communities.

Administers an extensive public service program identifying suitable public service agencies; working with outside agencies to develop large-scale programs to work in public service roles; creating visibility for the public service center of the organization. Provides education, training and reflection opportunities to students engaged in public service.
  • Develop and maintain community partnerships to bridge the gap between the University and the community. Direct and develop yearly community service projects for residents.
