Custom Scope
Applies advanced computational, computer science, data science, and CI software research and development principles, with relevant domain science knowledge where applicable, to perform highly complex research, technology and software development which involve in-depth evaluation of variable factors impacting medium to large projects of broad scope and complexities. Designs, develops, and optimizes components/tools for major HPC/data science/CI projects in diverse research application areas. Resolves complex research and technology development and integration issues. Gives technical presentations to associated research and technology groups and management. Evaluates new hardware and software technologies for advancing complex HPC, data science, CI projects. May represent the organization as part of a team at national and international meetings, conferences and committees. Assists in the design, implementation and recommends new hardware and software technologies for advancing complex HPC, data science, CI projects. May lead a team of research and technical staff.

Department Custom Scope
The Senior Research Computing Facilitator position at the University of California, Riverside will play a crucial role in supporting researchers' access to and effective utilization of cutting-edge research computing resources, including the newly established Ursa Major partnership with Google Cloud Platform. The position will apply advanced computational and data science principles to partner with and support highly complex research computing technology, researchers, and research projects. This position will assist with implementing the new cutting-edge Ursa Major research computing service, providing researchers with access to high-performance workstations, auto-scaling HPC clusters, research AI and machine learning services, and secure research storage. This position will take part in the Research Computing Team's commitment to providing a secure research computing infrastructure and support services that will increase research output, grant funding, campus income, and prestige, positioning UCR as a leading R1 research university. The Senior Research Computing Facilitator will report to the Associate Director of Research Computing and occasionally stand in for the AD of Research Computing at departmental or organizational meetings.

Applies advanced HPC/data/CI research and development concepts to plan, design, develop, modify, debug, deploy and evaluate highly complex HPC (software and/or hardware) or data science or computational science or CI software and technologies or combination thereof. Analyzes existing highly complex software, scientific codes, data science/analytics codes/algorithms, and HPC related hardware or works to formulate logic for new and highly complex systems and devises new algorithms. Performs highly complex analysis and tests/debugs highly complex software and hardware. Applies highly complex programming principles. Initiates large and complex research projects with multi-institutional scope in HPC/data/CI areas. May involve collaboration with domain science experts from various research areas such as bioinformatics, GIS, data analytics, computational drug discovery, where applicable to perform these.

Understands and applies advanced research and development practices, community standards and department policies and procedures. May serve as technical lead for multiple research and development projects of moderate to broad scope and lead a team of researchers and technical staff. Enforces and manages research and development project plans with interested collaborators, stakeholders and users as applicable.

Design and develop highly complex software and hardware solutions for specific research projects, working closely with domain science experts to understand their unique computational and data analysis needs and tailoring solutions accordingly.

Performs in depth benchmarking, profiling and analysis of HPC hardware or scientific codes, or data science/analytics codes/algorithms or tests, optimizes and develops complex CI software. Interprets results of profiling, identify inefficiencies, and develops algorithmic/coding/workflow optimizations to enhance performance and capabilities.

Performs in-depth evaluation of usage modes, capabilities, characteristics and performance of multiple highly complex HPC/data science/CI/domain science software and tools and makes expert usage recommendations based on analysis. Publishes and presents, based on research and development work, results about cyber-infrastructure tools, HPC systems, data science techniques and tools, performance and algorithm enhancement in research venues to attract usage from domain science communities, or to promote latest technologies within the community. May represent the organization as part of a team at national and international meetings, conferences and committees.

Stay current with emerging trends and best practices in HPC, data science, and CI research and development, attending relevant conferences, workshops, and training sessions to expand knowledge and skills in these areas.

Collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop and implement complex research and development plans for cutting-edge Ursa Major HPC, Workstation, AI/ML and data science technologies.

Specifies, develops, implements and executes highly complex software and hardware research and development plans. Initiates and contributes to HPC/data science/CI research proposals with partners internal and external to the institution, in collaboration with other researchers and PIs. May lead a proposal of small to moderate size as a PI.

Collaborate with other members of the Research Computing team to provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff and student employees, helping to cultivate a community of skilled HPC/data science/CI professionals within the organization.
