Custom Scope
Using knowledge and skills as a seasoned, experienced Student Services professional, performs the full range of duties and responsibilities within a Student Life specialization. Assesses situations and determines appropriate action or referral. Works independently under general supervision to provide information and interpretation of complex policies, procedures and regulations. Identifies and responds to student needs for programs, services, and crisis intervention.

Department Custom Scope
The Resident Director (RD) is a full-time, 12-month, live-in position and serves as a member of the Residence Life Professional team. The RD is responsible for resident orientation to community living; resident counseling; policy enforcement and adjudication; day and night on-site crisis response; student programming; student staff recruitment, selection, training and evaluation; housing management and special projects. The RD provides a variety of support services to the residential students and assists with the management of the housing program. The residential facilities include residence halls, apartments and family housing. This is a four (4) year contract appointment with the possibility to be extended for one (1) additional year for a maximum total of five (5) years.

  • Supervises a student staff of 8-20 student staff members. Monitors student employee performance and provides direction and assistance. Counsels and evaluates student employee performance. Recommends corrective action, hiring, and separation of student employees when appropriate.

Provides ongoing transformational advising and development to student leaders participating in student government, co-curricular programs and/or organizations on a wide range of issues. Advises student leaders on complex and sensitive issues. Brings extensive knowledge to a student generated field of interest and supports, guides and mentors students in formulating projects related to those issues. Guides students in interaction with campus leaders and represents students on these issues when appropriate. Coaches student leaders on communication and leadership skills.
  • Advises student leaders through various residential situations, which are both complex and sensitive. Works with staff to develop programming that meets the requirements of the programming model and residential needs Guides students in interaction with campus leaders and represents students on these issues when appropriate. Participates in the adjudication process for student conduct cases of moderate complexity. Interviews witnesses and writes up findings regarding alleged conduct violations. Provides guidance to lower level staff. Consults with higher level professionals as needed. Makes recommendations for sanctions.
  • Directly responsible for adjudicating assigned caseloads. Applies principles of student development in the administration of Housing policy and procedure, holds formal hearings, Responsible for the selection, training and advising of student conflict resolution teams. Advises students, negotiates behavioral agreements and mandates referrals to appropriate campus offices.

Independently resolves moderate complex individual cases regarding student affairs or student life.
  • Serves in a first line on-call duty rotation. Serves as the official hearing officer for their area.

Oversees and is directly responsible for RA programming. Reviewing proposals, providing feedback and direction. Approving expenditure in alignment with department and campus procurement policies. Applies principles of student development, fiduciary responsibility, and project management in the administration of program management.

Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external organization stakeholders critical to program success.
  • Serves as a liaison between residents and Housing Services staff and keeps in regular communication with the appropriate representatives in their area. Serves as a liaison with Housing Services and campus departments by serving on campus committees and working with departments on campus issues.

Provides recommendations, reports, and metrics on feasibility of new and current programs.
  • Recommends changes to residential life policies, processes, and procedures (such as programming models, protocols, initiatives, etc). Works with staff to implement viable and necessary assessment of programs

Independently provides the full range of support services for a student program(s) and/or provides the full range of academic support services for a residential complex.
  • Facilitates and develops a sense of community and responsibility among residents and the development of their academic, intellectual, cultural and social development through staff supervision and student outreach. Attends community and large- scale activities, speaks to residents in their area and provides personal outreach and general visibility.

Administers a limited public service program, providing such services as working with outside agencies to refer students and develop programs to work in public service roles; identifying resources for student volunteer opportunities; matching student volunteers with outside public service agencies. Provides education, training and reflection opportunities to students engaged in public service.
  • Works with their student staff and residents to do plan and execute programs that encourage community development and personal enrichment.

Manages a large a student services business or multiple services. Recommends new business opportunities. Participates in long range planning and development and new initiatives.
  • Works with the office staff with the coordination of move-ins and move-outs for their area. Works with the Housing Assignments staff to ensure appropriate room inventory inspections and damage assessments and appropriate placement and approved room changes.
