Department Custom Scope
The Network Administrator is a member of the Network Operations team within Information Technology Solutions (ITS) and shares responsibility for the development, operation, and maintenance of UCR's network infrastructure. Responsibilities include managing wire/wireless networks, VoIP, installation and configuration of all network equipment (traditional network and telecom specific). The Network Administrator must maintain a high level of network-related expertise and a high level of awareness regarding any technology implemented within the university (e.g.. routers, switches, firewalls, wireless, load balancing). The incumbent must work closely with all teams to ensure seamless delivery of infrastructure implementations. The Network Administrator will act as a line of support for the Network team, providing timely troubleshooting and diagnosis for incident/problem resolution.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Implements complex communications and network system changes. Participates in the configuration and testing of complex network diagnostic tools and software.
  • Evaluate, test, deploy, inventory software and hardware upgrades to networking infrastructure. Assist in the configuration and deployment of core and peripheral network devices, which will require continuous learning of new devices (i.e. network routers and switches of various types, end devices of various types such, bu not limited to, wireless access points, phones, application specific appliances, etc.).

Responsible for general network issue determination and resolution. Troubleshoots complex issues in network systems software and distribution and access electronics for medium and large network installations. Works directly with vendor/manufacturer technical support to isolate and resolve complex hardware and software issues. Configures and troubleshoots systems that support network services.
  • Responsible for managing the daily operations of UCR networks. Contribute to and maintain network standards. Manage and troubleshoot network and internet connectivity throughout the organization. Install new/rebuild existing networks and network related devices.

Identifies and selects training opportunities for professional development. Participates in cross-functional group discussions, activities and efforts.
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly meetings with other ITS support teams. Provide training articles and material to ITS professionals.

Coordinates all phases of multiple, complex network projects: planning, design, procurement, implementation and documentation. Consults with other units on new or retrofit building projects and to provide advice and guidance on communications infrastructure.
  • Proactive monitoring of all network devices, services, and servers using a combination of tools to ensure high availability and SLA's. Collect and review network utilization data for capacity and planning purposes. Assist in developing, implementing, testing, and maintaining hardware refresh plans.

Performs complex analysis and takes a lead role in the design, specification and installation of distribution and access electronics. Evaluates and tests new or enhanced electronics and services. Provides expert advice to users/units on communication needs.
  • Research and recommend innovative, preferably automated, approaches for network administration tasks.

Contribute to and maintain practices related to networks. Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures, and network related documentation. Update and provide documentation for all network devices implemented and maintained.

Responsible for documenting Root Cause Analysis (RCA) after a service outage or disruptive event.

Ability to work periodically outside of Normal Business Hours as assigned. Required
