Custom Scope
Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced academic adviser. Provides advice to students on the full range of requirements for a department, college, or school with a wide variety of course requirements. Recommends solutions to progression and requirement issues. Advice may include not-clearly-defined programs such as independent study programs, interdisciplinary programs, or multiple programs. Works independently under general supervision.

Department Custom Scope
Under the supervision of the Director of Teacher Education, the Academic Advisor interprets academic requirements and provides fundamental academic advising to undergraduate and graduate students, including advising for retention. The Academic Advisor also assists the Director in implementing a recruitment and retention plan/strategies (including participation on Recruitment/Marketing Committee) for students interested in pursuing a career in one of the teaching and education professions. The Academic Advisor develops and updates web information on career-related and admissions topics. Under supervision, uses principles of developmental academic advising to promote academic, career and life goals in an effort to support student retention, timeliness to degree, academic success, and intellectual and personal development. Under supervision, the Academic Advisor organizes workshops and conducts advising that support student retention and timeliness to credential and/or degree. Works collaboratively with other TEP staff to support student retention, and with other departments (i.e., Cashier's Office, Financial Aid Office, Graduate Division Admission Office, and Registrar's Office) on resolving problems with billing and the online admissions module in UCR's Student Information System. Serves as liaison between TEP and Financial Aid, which includes collaborating with financial aid to create procedures that facilitate disbursement of aid, and collaborating to create an advising process (including workshops) that helps students to understand financial resources available to them during the admission process after SIR-ing into the TEP. The Academic Advisor will also make teacher credential recommendations to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Incumbent helps with other TEP duties as needed.

Key Responsibilities

Provides advice and assistance to students on all aspects of their academic experience, including progression and requirement matters for the department/school/college.
  • Independently provide advice and assistance to students on academic and degree progress and major requirements for the department/school/college. Provides academic advising and assistance, responds to inquiries, investigates and resolves problems related to probation issues, registration holds, enrollment, and credentialing. Student Conduct: provides information to students and faculty regarding organization policies and procedures. Advises on complex issues (multiple degrees or withdrawal from the university). Credential recommendation: confirms that students meet requirements for teaching credential and degree completion. Makes credential recommendations to California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Advises students and faculty on course requirements for teaching credentials. Assists in field placements and updating memorandum of understanding agreements with local school districts. Helps with other TEP duties as needed.

  • Assists students in determining a major and alternative academic options, scheduling conflicts and similar issues. Monitors and evaluates students' completion of academic requirements. Applies articulated courses to program/degree requirements and certifies degree completion.

Recruitment and Admissions: Implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; reviews domestic transcripts for degree eligibility; initiates and arranges student recruitment visits.

Advises on special eligibility requirements such as Honors programs/fellowships/scholarships.
  • Provides students with information and participates in processing, evaluation, and awarding of student fellowships, grants, and other awards. Advises students on financial aid options.

Determines barriers, distractions, and complications affecting a student's academic success, helps students recognize these key non-academic issues, and makes appropriate referrals for additional therapeutic counseling and/or assistance from other units.
  • Makes referrals to help students with their academic program (e.g., health service, disabled students program, Colleges/Schools, transfer center, academic departments, graduate division, etc.). Refers students to the Career Center for strategies for career placements (e.g. resume writing and interviewing).

Student Retention: Analyzes student data for the development and implementation of student retention activities. Advises on program improvement. Advises on withdrawal from the university and responds to inquiries, investigates, and resolves problems related to credentialing. Under supervision, assists with data collection and analysis of student and program data for reports, program improvement, and student retention.

Events: Coordinates and implements non-complex program and student events and assists in the planning and implementation of program and student complex events (e.g., job fairs, student orientation).
