Department Custom Scope
Under general supervision of the Head of Library Facilities, this position is to maintain general conditions of the University Library, to ensure the safety, security and comfort for student, staff, and academics. The Senior Building Maintenance Worker will perform a variety of semi-skilled and/or planned general maintenance, tasks, projects and assignments, including but not limited to, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, replacing lamps, drywall, paint, installing & moving furniture, seismic bracing of file cabinets and bookcases. Maintain operating data in the form of paper and/or computer logs of building repairs. Retrieve and enter customer service requests electronically. Performs duties in the Library Receiving Departments which includes sorting & delivering mail between the libraries, wrapping up outgoing books and equipment for library departments. Assists with responding to emergency situations during scheduled hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns, performs all job duties in adherence with the University and departmental guidelines. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students.

Key Responsibilities

Perform a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in the maintenance, alteration and repair of buildings, related facilities, office furniture and equipment. Perform minor installation of fire extinguishers, dry erase boards, seismic bracing of file cabinets and bookcases. Make minor repairs to faulty wiring of equipment such as, sockets, switches and electric staplers, 3M Desensitizers and microfilm reader printers. Remove and replace plumbing fixtures such as faucets, drain pipes, garbage disposals and toilet fixtures. Perform minor drywall repair and painting projects. Install book stack signage and directional signage. Clean, adjust, lubricate, or replace door closers, locks, latch hinges and other building hardware. Responsible for replacing batteries and lightbulbs. Remove and re-install library carrels. Operate and maintain a variety of power and hand tools of the various trades. Responsible for inputting building work orders electronically using the campus online program for repairs that we cannot perform. Responsible for the cleanup of spills and trash in the public areas of the libraries. Responsible for the overall general appearance of the Library not covered by Campus Custodial, including cleaning of walls, stairs and stair rails, light fixtures and HVAC vents and return vents. Assist the Head of Library Facilities with building emergencies such as; evacuating the libraries during emergencies, elevator problems, over flowing toilets, electrical and HVAC problems. Inspect all areas to determine the maintenance needs and prioritize work by certain criteria (safety issues, proper operation, cosmetic, etc.). Schedule projects/repairs when there is the least potential for out-of-service time of equipment for patron/employees. Make recommendations and assist the Head of Library Facilities with equipment and materials selection. Responsible for maintaining/restocking the libraries vending machines. Prepare reports of work done for statistical purposes.

Responsible for loading and operating the library truck in a safe, efficient manner with the understanding of University and Departmental policies and procedures governing the loading and operating of library vehicles. Responsible for the delivery of supplies, equipment, mail and materials between the libraries and Campus departments. Deliveries are to be accomplished in a manner which provides for security, efficiency and prevents damage to the materials being transported, University property, University personnel and students. Assist with the receipt and delivery of incoming/outgoing packages from various vendors. Pick up miscellaneous supplies and equipment from various vendors off campus. Pick up various gifts of books and equipment donated from outside agencies or personnel. Responsible for sorting and processing the incoming/outgoing mail in the Library Receiving Departments. Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills appropriate for a customer service operation. Responsible for moving various pieces of furniture and equipment as needed. Responsible for the management of records for the libraries equipment in the Inventory Database and make the necessary updates in the system when changes occur.
