Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Typically leads or supervises other staff or students.

Department Custom Scope
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Recreation for Outdoor Excursions and Ropes, the Team Building and Climbing Coordinator is a critical member of the Recreation programming team responsible for the development, management, oversight, and assessment of the Ropes program. These areas include the Challenge Course, Mobile Rock Wall, "The Rock" indoor climbing and bouldering facility, and driver and trailer training. Important duties include risk management, staffing and supervision, program development and implementation, and oversight and maintenance of facilities and equipment. The incumbent works closely with departmental, divisional, campus, and community partners to deliver client service-based programming that aligns with campus goals at all levels.

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Required
Advanced degree in Outdoor Education, Recreation Administation, Leisure Studies, Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education, or a related field. Preferred

6 - 10 years of related experience. Required
Experience supervising or mentoring college age students, maintaining climbing wall/challenge course equipment, student development, and leadership training. Experience working with diverse populations/clientele. Preferred
Experience leading and advising participants and teaching technical skills; ability to lead and supervise in potentially extreme environmental conditions. Preferred
Professional experience working in university outdoor programming including and facilitation, challenge course, and climbing walls. Preferred
Experience in programming involving team/group/community building, challenge course facilitation, indoor climbing. Required

  • Develops and administers programs, goals, objectives, and assessments. Reports on results, including strategies for process improvement. Assists in developing strategic plans and budget. Monitors budget, manages contracts, invoices, payment collection, and record-keeping. Recommends purchases of supplies and equipment.

Coordinates a variety of social, cultural, recreational and physical activities that are offered on a short-term or intermittent basis.
  • Oversees event planning and logistics while working closely with customers and student staff. Leads trainings and/or events when there is a need for a higher level of supervision or skill. Reserves vehicles, facilities, and equipment for events. May require off-campus travel.

Selects, supervises and evaluates student employees, student officials and referees. Assists in development and implementation of comprehensive student employee training program.
  • Coordinates student staff including hiring, training, scheduling, feedback, evaluations, payroll approvals, and disciplinary processes. Teaches and mentors student staff in planning/organization, technical skills, human interaction, educational/teaching skills, and reflection/self-awareness. Trains staff in group building, facilitation, and debriefing. May drive and train others in operation of university vehicles including trailers.

Proposes updates/revisions to standard operating procedures and guidelines. Conducts periodic reviews of historical and statistical records and standings.
  • Maintains certification and training records of staff as needed. Updates staff manuals, procedures, and guidelines.

Enforces program policies and procedures. Conducts ongoing evaluation of recreational programs to ensure compliance with university and program objectives.

Coordinates professional and student staff to develop and implement publicity and promotional programs. Supports design, maintenance and ongoing use of comprehensive website for all program participants.
  • May represent the department or program at campus and other events to increase customer awareness and share information. May utilize social media, email, newsletters, and software applications to market programs/events and contact customers.

Researches, develops and implements activity-specific risk management guidelines for all programs.
  • In collaboration with Assistant Director and risk management staff, develops or updates necessary emergency procedures, safety practices, risk management processes, operation manuals, needs assessments, and reporting. Communicates with department staff to ensure facility spaces and equipment are maintained as needed to meet industry standards for programmatic use. This includes implementing routine information sharing, inspections, organization, cleaning, and maintenance. May assist with vehicle maintenance, accident reports, and vehicle safety. Develops and supports a culture of trust among staff while training, debriefing, evaluating, and reporting on processes, activities, and events. Schedules and documents annual inspections for all equipment and facilities.

As the department's technical leader, regularly provides guidance to others regarding the program's specifics, events and/or activities.
  • Mentors student staff before, during, and after programs and work shifts. Provides excellent customer service. Utilizes software applications and excellent attention to detail in support of programming.
