Custom Scope
Using skills as a seasoned, experienced student services professional, provides the full range of student services within an organization such as an academic department, school, or college. Independently advises students and resolves student services-related issues on the full range of academic issues inherent within the organization. Advises faculty and management on a variety of student issues. Works with the department's/school's/college's management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures. Guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs is provided by offices specializing in those fields, e.g., the financial aid office, graduate division, or student learning center, OR by the chair/dean and faculty of the department/school/college. May administer funds for student programs.

Department Custom Scope
The Academic Exchange and Continuing Education is a position under UC Alianza MX. Alianza MX is a systemwide initiative that was created in September 2019 through the integration of three systemwide University of California programs that focus on Mexico. UC Riverside serves as the host campus. The Student and Extension Affairs Coordinator is responsible for facilitating system-wide collaborations for development of student mobility in the UC campuses with Mexico and actively advance Alianza UCMX's objectives in student exchange, extension courses and program opportunities. The Academic Exchange and Continuing Education Coordinator is responsible for activities that will enhance the undergraduate and graduate bilateral student experience and collaborations. The incumbent is a highly effective program coordinator, with proven skills in enhancing, evaluating, marketing, and scaling existing programs; has outstanding organizational, interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills; able to manage multiple priorities; and thrives in a fast-paced work environment. The incumbent will collaborate with Alianza MX Staff in Riverside and Casa de California Staff in Mexico City, and across the UC Campuses to support the implementation of high-impact student programs that promote student engagement and academic excellence. These include, but are not limited to working with Student Affairs, Graduate Deans, Admissions Offices, Global Affairs, and Faculty in general.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Recruitment and Admissions: Plans and implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; utilizing in-depth knowledge of the organization's admissions criteria, helps rank applicants for admissions; evaluates domestic and international transcripts for degree eligibility; initiates and arranges student recruitment visits.
  • Liaises with pertinent units and handles tools for communications to disseminate Alianza MX opportunities and other initiatives related to CA-MX student mobility and exchange. Supports the Associate Director of Academic Exchange and Continuing Education of Alianza MX in building relationships with UC faculty, administrators, alumni, and/or students as needed to promote student exchanges, collaborations, and partnership agreements. Works collaboratively with Alianza MX's programs and its stakeholders to support the advancement of Alianza MX's student mobility agenda and goals.

Applying professional student services concepts, provides the full range of student services to student population served by the organization.
  • Delivers programming opportunities in and with Mexico to UC audiences; works with UC campuses offices and programs to develop high-impact and sustainable opportunities with Mexico partners. Program Design: develops routine contact procedures necessary to inform and promotes programs. Regulatory issues: provides support and understands the admissions procedures, credit determination for binational efforts, exceptions, and maintains relationships including but not limited with our Mexico partners and diverse state Ministries of Education, various Mexican and American educational institutions, and the US Embassy in Mexico.

Financial Aid: Oversees the administration, evaluation, and awarding of student fellowships, grants, scholarships, and other awards; advises students on financial aid options of the organization and extra-mural fellowship opportunities; oversees processes for equitable assignment of Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs)and coordinates GSI assignments each term.
  • Advises on grant application and evaluation processes to faculty and administrators. Develops and manages Calls and coordinates with the corresponding offices for fund allocation and disbursement.

Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students, such as information about the organization, or academic strategies and enrichment programs.
  • Promotes and supports academic cooperation agreements and exchanges among higher education institutions in Mexico and the UC that facilitate the exchange of students and/or extension and executive education programs.

Provides advice and assistance to students and scholars regarding complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility/authorization. Coordinates and implements programs and workshops to support and retain international students/scholars. Makes referrals to off campus and community resources.
  • Creates briefing materials (dossiers, concept notes, reports) on relevant contextual variables pertinent to student mobility and exchange between the United States and Mexico; monitors relevant system, local and national practices and initiatives involving student exchange and mobility and updates materials when needed.

Events: Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events, such as commencements.

Career Counseling: Advises department/college/school students on the job market process, and the standards and norms specific to the student's field of study; advises on summer internship programs; develops and maintains network of departments and regional firms interested in hiring summer students.

Student Assistant Management: Coordinates recruitment of Student Assistants for the UCR office; oversees student workers and develops and maintains network of departments and offices for recruitment.
