Department Custom Scope
To provide full professional level technical glassblowing support for research and teaching. This support includes but is not limited to working closely with faculty, staff, and graduate students on the design, construction, assembly, and testing of glassware and managing day-to-day operation of the glass blowing facility which supports primarily CNAS college departments as well as other departments on campus. This is the only Glass Shop on campus.

Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations, and eight years of experience in glassblowing of experimental laboratory apparatus, including at least two years at the Senior Laboratory Glassblower level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. Required

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Design and Fabrication - designs, fabricates, and constructs experimental and class lab glassware in consultation with researchers. Repairs and/or maintains various scientific apparatus. Makes modification/repairs to existing glassware to improve its performance and reliability.

Glass Shop Administration - operates the Glass Shop with the responsibility for ordering and maintaining appropriate stocks of materials, maintaining administrative records, recording labor and material costs for various projects and submitting recharges on a monthly basis.

Safety - oversees safe operation of the Glass Shop and provides ideas and suggestions for improvement of shop operations. Instructs researchers and students in proper operating procedures regarding glass apparatus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge/Skill/Ability Requirement
Incumbent must be able to apply a high degree of understanding and comprehension of the researchers needs in order to accomplish many and varied jobs. Required
Must be competent doing lathe or bench work, routine and non-routine work. Required
Must be knowledgeable when using hazardous chemicals such as hydroflouric acids, nitric acid, and silvering chemicals and be able to properly handle hazardous gases such as hydrogen and oxygen. Required
Skills and ability to use originality and ingenuity in solving the researchers problems and keeping informed of technical advances made in the field of glassblowing. Required
Incumbent must have expertise in the repair, design and fabrication of vacuum, distillation, cryogenic, optical and other glassware apparatus. To achieve these goals, incumbent must be adept at working with quartz, borosilicate and soft glasses. Must be able to fabricate apparatuses such as double helium dewars, quartz optical dewars, three stage D,P.I. fusion pumps and Shell design vapor and liquid dividing heads. The production of dewars and distillation apparatus requires knowledge of silvering, evacuating to high vacuum and sealing off pumping stems. Required
Must be able to communicate in a professional manner. Required
Requires technical knowledge of complex scientific fabrication techniques to properly fabricate scientific apparatus which may have to withstand extremes of pressure, temperature and various stresses and stains. Required
Must have working knowledge of different materials used in scientific apparatus with respect to their characteristics, i.e. hardness, grade and other similar factors. Required
