Custom Scope
Using knowledge and skills as a seasoned, experienced Student Services professional, performs the full range of duties and responsibilities within a Student Life specialization. Assesses situations and determines appropriate action or referral. Works independently under general supervision to provide information and interpretation of complex policies, procedures and regulations. Identifies and responds to student needs for programs, services, and crisis intervention.

Department Custom Scope
The Leadership and Service Programs area works to make service to the community and civic mindedness a critical part of leadership on the UCR campus. Furthermore, this programmatic area aims to make meaningful community engagement a pillar of the Highlander experience. To this end, the Coordinator for Leadership and Service is responsible for providing comprehensive support to leadership, community service, and civic engagement programs within the Office of Student Life. This position will take on large-scale programs/projects within the Leadership and Service Programs area, including but not limited to coordination of community service efforts, the Community Service Center, Community Service Portal, leadership programming, and working with campus and community partners to promote and provide leadership and service opportunities for UCR students. Collaboration with various departments and community partners will be an essential function of this position. The Coordinator will contribute to the Leadership and Service Programs strategic plan and goals. This position will support the Student Life mission, vision, and strategic plan, which focuses on social justice, leadership development, and creating a sense of belonging for students. This position will provide support for all leadership and civic engagement initiatives within the Leadership and Service Programs area. This position will also support general Student Life functions and events as needed.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external organization stakeholders critical to program success.
  • Collaborates with various on and off campus partners, including but not limited to Government and Community Relations, Undergraduate Education, the Ethnic & Gender Offices, Residential Life, ASUCR, Athletics, HUB Programs, and other departments within Student Affairs and across the University. These relationships are essential to ensure leadership, service, and civic engagement programs are comprehensive, meeting student needs, and aligning with division and campus goals.

Provides ongoing transformational advising and development to student leaders participating in student government, co-curricular programs and/or organizations on a wide range of issues. Advises student leaders on complex and sensitive issues. Brings extensive knowledge to a student generated field of interest and supports, guides and mentors students in formulating projects related to those issues. Guides students in interaction with campus leaders and represents students on these issues when appropriate. Coaches student leaders on communication and leadership skills.
  • Through the various Leadership and Service programs, coaches and trains student leaders to identify and develop leadership, civic engagement, and community service opportunities.

Administers a limited public service program, providing such services as working with outside agencies to refer students and develop programs to work in public service roles; identifying resources for student volunteer opportunities; matching student volunteers with outside public service agencies. Provides education, training and reflection opportunities to students engaged in public service.
  • Maintains relationships with various campus and community partners in order to connect UCR students to community service, civic engagement, and leadership opportunities. Collaborates with Undergraduate Education to maintain the Community Service Portal to support connections between students and community agencies. Develops community service and community engagement events and opportunities for students on campus and in the greater Riverside Community. Assists with development of civic engagement and leadership programs.

Provides recommendations, reports, and metrics on feasibility of new and current programs.
  • Administers program assessments to determine if they are in alignment with strategic plan and learning outcomes. Oversee tracking and reporting of service hours and experiences through Community Service Portal.
