Department Custom Scope
The School of Education (SOE) Writing Support Center was founded in 2020 to provide Education, Society, and Human Development majors and minors with a comprehensive and community-oriented space to hone their writing skills for their coursework and beyond. The Center supports SOE students with any writing project at any stage of the writing process in one-on-one appointments and workshops throughout the academic term. The Center also partners with faculty to provide assignment support or specific workshops as needed as well as to provide support for graduate school application, grant proposals and other writing projects. The SOE seeks to expand the Center to more fully support undergraduate, graduate and faculty writing in the SOE. The Writing Center Director (Director) will need to establish and articulate the Center?s policies and procedures based on the SOE?s mission. The Director will report directly to the Dean and work in collaboration with the SOE Associate Deans for Undergrad and Grad Education, the Undergrad and Grad Academic Advisors, and Community Engaged Learning Coordinator to establish and maintain a Center to provide intensive, equity-driven writing and research support for the SOE community. The Director will oversee the coordination of writing workshops with SOE instructors and further enhance relationships with the Academic Resource Center, Grad and Undergrad Writing Centers, the University Library and other programs in support of SOE students. The incumbent will also oversee a team of peer advisors who will provide students with personalized writing instruction that reflects and integrates current writing theory and practice for a wide range of writing projects. The incumbent will hire, train, support and evaluate peer advisors and provide them with professional development on writing pedagogy theory and practice. The Director will set the vision of the Center, manage the day-to-day operations, administer existing programs and develop new programming. The incumbent will participate in all phases of the Center's research, work independently and with faculty to develop the Center's agendas, work with ancillary staff to ensure the successful implementation of the Center's efforts, oversee the Center's personnel, and represent the Center to external constituencies - including community partners. The day-to-day responsibilities will be diverse and require knowledge and application of principles from multiple disciplines, including but not limited to writing, composition, pedagogy, scientific research, outreach and external relations, strategic planning, program development, project management, and development. The Director is expected to create and maintain relationships with external constituencies, represent the Center before key stakeholders, oversee the Center's budget, be solely responsible for identifying and pursuing funding in support of the Center's operations, and frequently work with faculty, staff, and leadership of the School of Education, to actualize the Center's goals, and work with regional leadership to create partnerships to further the Center's mission and elevate the Center's visibility on and off-campus. The Director will also develop metrics to gauge the Center's progress, adjust programming to ensure adherence to the SOE?s mission, and make recommendations to SOE leadership as to changes that would improve the Center's overall efficacy, impact, and functionality. The Director will be vested with a high level of decision-making authority and independence to act. Most of the position's responsibilities (~80%) will be conceived of and implemented by the incumbent in support of the SOE?s strategic plan, without oversight; frequently, the Director will be solely responsible for every phase of a project or program's life cycle. The remaining responsibilities will be completed in collaboration with SOE leadership and will typically focus on broader decisions, like agenda setting.
