Generic Scope
Spends the majority of time (50% or more) achieving organizational objectives through the coordinated achievements of subordinate staff. Establishes departmental goals and objectives, functions with autonomy. Manages the accountability and stewardship of human, financial, and often physical resources in compliance with departmental and organizational goals and objectives. Ensures subordinate supervisors and professionals adhere to defined internal controls. Manages systems and procedures to protect departmental assets.

Custom Scope
Under the direction of an Associate or Assistant University Librarian, manages a department library, or a unit within the main libraries. Manages the Library Professionals and/or Library Assistants within that unit. Determines or recommends short-term strategy, policies, services, and programs for the library or unit. Responsibilities are defined by overall objectives and involve a high level of complexity in functional/subject area specialization.

Under the direction of an Assistant or Associate University Librarian, manages the operations of the library or unit, ensuring adequate coverage. Manages the Access Services Department and oversees the work of the three units within Access Services (circulation/reserves, interlibrary loan, and library security). Provides leadership for the development and implementation of programs which promote innovative user services for the Library and the maintenance of an atmosphere conducive to excellent, proactive customer service. Departmental management includes the formulation, recommendation and implementation of policies and workflows based on general strategic and programmatic needs of the organization. Manages personnel actions within the department including onboarding, training, personnel actions, workflow and policy oversight. Actively contributes to the Library?s overall mission and goals through service on the organization?s Library Leadership Team. Works collaboratively with other departments and units within the library to develop and improve services for Library patrons and stakeholders.

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Required
Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS) Preferred

Manages the resources of the library/unit, including the budget.
  • Analyzes, reviews and interprets data to provide recommendations for policy, staffing and workflow changes. Performs ongoing quality evaluation and improvement regarding patron and collection safety, patron services, integrated library management system functions for circulation and reserve, equipment purchasing and resource sharing practices. Prepares and manages the department's annual student staffing budget. Prepares reports and information regarding staffing, equipment and technology needs. Consults and works with library colleagues in order to make service recommendations and collaboratively implement changes based on stakeholder needs and priorities. Prepares annual budget with projected requirements for staff, equipment and technology. Consult and work with library colleagues in order to make reasonable decisions about access and safety priorities and policies.

Determines or recommends operating principles and practices, such as hours of operation, acquisitions, and assignment of duties.
  • Develops clear and consistent policies and services responsive to user needs and attentive to efficient and effective operations. Leads efforts and documents policies related to space planning, collection security, building security and human safety. Serves as the first line of contact for safety and security issues outside of normal hours. Determines overall service standards.

Recommends staffing levels and mixture of staff and students to realize optimal efficiencies and cost effectiveness.
  • Provides leadership to supervised staff and promotes accountability, high performance, staff engagement, diverse perspectives, professional behavior, and a spirit of cooperation. Responsible for opening and closing the Rivera and Orbach library facilities as necessary. Performs other duties as assigned.
