Department Custom Scope
Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Cloud and System Engineering, the Cloud Architect is responsible for providing strategic direction for cloud and system design, integration, and management across the organization. In collaboration with Cloud and Systems Engineers, and other key Information Technology Solutions (ITS) stakeholders, the Cloud Architect stays informed of emerging cloud architectures and assesses their viability within the organization's environment. The Cloud Architect designs, builds, and deploys the overall cloud and system infrastructure architecture, working closely with developers to build, deploy, and migrate applications within the organization's hybrid cloud environment. The Cloud Architect also researches and informs colleagues on relevant cloud technology best practices and industry standards

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Initiates, designs and deploys large scale systems. Designs highly complex user systems interfaces, business software prototypes and new systems or major enhancements to existing programs.
  • Develops and documents cloud standards that define the best practices for deploying and managing cloud resources. Automates cloud resource deployments using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and other configuration management tools, such as Terraform and Ansible. Works with stakeholders to gather requirements and design cloud solutions that meet their needs. Monitors and troubleshoots cloud deployments to ensure that they are running smoothly and meet performance requirements.

Performs highly complex feasibility analysis on current and potential future projects. Gathers information and participates in selection of technical purchases with regards to processing, data storage, data access and software development. Establishes metrics and evaluates results.
  • Uses metrics to identify opportunities to optimize cloud compute costs, such as reducing underutilized resources or migrating workloads to a more cost-effective cloud region. Tracks cloud compute usage data, such as CPU utilization, memory usage, and storage consumption. Designs the appropriate cloud architecture solution to meet business needs.

Applies advanced IT architecture concepts to function as the highest level technical expert. Often serves as consultant to management. May lead or provide guidance to large development team in design of highly complex software systems. Advises on selection of technological purchases with regards to processing, data storage, data access and software development.
  • Works closely with the ITS Data Architect and Lead Application Architect to design complex, technical solutions for campus. Participates in technology selection working groups, recommending technical solutions that meet the needs of the campus community. Stays abreast of the latest technology trends, and identifies opportunities to improve the campus technology infrastructure.
