Generic Scope
Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives.

Custom Scope
Supervises Admissions Recruitment Specialists and support staff and administers a portion of an admissions or recruitment program. Independently oversees day-to-day operations, and determines goals and performance expectations of subordinates. Makes recommendations on improvements to program/function to manager(s).

Department Custom Scope
The purpose of the Assistant Director, is to oversee all aspects of diversity recruitment and application evaluation within the UC Riverside Undergraduate Admissions office. In concert with the Director and Associate Directors of Undergraduate Admissions, the incumbent is responsible to develop an annual strategic plan in line with the campus and Enrollment Services strategic plans to meet diversity enrollment objectives. Under the general supervision of the Associate Director, the incumbent supervises full-time admission specialist who are responsible for the recruitment and evaluation of applicants to UCR. This position will require travel to recruit prospective and admitted students by providing oversight at various programs and events as well as participation in consortium travel and conferences.

Key Responsibilities

Monitors employee performance to ensure goals and objectives of the unit are met. Oversees the day-to-day operations of the unit.
  • Develops individual staff duties, procedures, goals, and tasks with respect to assigned recruitment objectives. Develops and implements clear target populations and priorities for each staff to minimize duplication of work. Directs the day-to-day operations of the units. Responsible for setting priorities and allocating resources to meet operational needs, assessing risks/benefits and identifying process improvements. Provides direction for coordination of workload in a dynamic office environment, sets guidelines for work performance, ensures business processes are clearly documented, tasks are delegated effectively and staff are well trained. Challenges others to develop as leaders while serving as a role model and mentor. Develops and implements an ongoing training plan or the unit staff.

  • Develops and executes an annual strategic plan for the unit that is in alignment with the campus, Enrollment Services, and UGA's plans to help realize campus undergraduate enrollment goals for African American, Native American, and other Historically Under-Served Populations (URMs). Leads the review of special messaging to URM populations Assists in the development of department objectives, Key Performance Indicators, and Action Plans to realize specific URM recruitment goals.

Creates strategic partnerships with campus and community constituents to better develop annual events geared to serving prospective students. Develop working relationships with key partners to expand the reach of the University into diverse communities. Develops and implements operational policies for all functional areas under purview related to the recruitment and yield of undergraduate students. Responsible for seeking input from customer groups to evaluate services and responding with appropriate service enhancements or improvements. Provides policy interpretation and procedural implementation for campus constituencies.

Develops long-and short-term budget projections for the CEO unit which includes, but is not limited to, monitoring and tracking expenditures and ensures expenditures do not exceed annual allocations and follow UCR policies and procedures. Provides monthly budget updates to Associate Director and provides recommendations that help ensure activity and expenses are within allocated budget.

Oversees and evaluates operational processes and recommends changes to streamline operations; participates in development and implementation of process improvement initiatives.
  • Ensures that staff are utilizing up to date UC and UCR policy and procedures for recruitment of freshman and transfer students. In collaboration with the Associate Director, provides direction and oversite for unit proposals for events, marketing, and student recruitment to ensure that all activity is within the scope and strategic plan.
