Generic Scope

Custom Scope
Uses advanced contracts and grants concepts to manage high volume and high complexity transactions. May review and guide others in the review of financial and administrative management requirements of research contract and grant proposals, awards, and/or transactions to ensure compliance with institutional and sponsor policies. Works independently to assess complex grant, contract and subcontract transactions where analysis requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. May be eligible for delegated signature authority. May review and sign transactions for less experienced staff. May serve as a technical specialist in a particular area, such as federal contracts, state contracts, subcontracts or information systems. Central Role(CR): Typically works on highly complex proposals and awards such as grants/contracts which require task budgets, option years, multiple investigators and multiple sub awards. Is eligible for delegated authority.

Department Custom Scope
Reporting to the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS), the position serves a strategic role in identifying and securing extramural funding that supports the research, instruction and public service missions of the College. The position serves a principal advisor to the Dean, Divisional Deans, faculty and administration with full responsibility to identify extramural funding opportunities, and coordinate College proposal and pre-award processes. The position will have a strong focus on acquiring large multi-investigator and multidisciplinary awards. Responsibilities related to these large complex proposals will include assisting with project conceptualization, team assembly, writing portions of proposals and editing them to unify and enhance the contributions of disparate writers, and critiquing proposals to ensure they respond to needs defined by the funding program. The role reports directly to the Dean with responsibility to provide planning and advisory service to the Dean and senior College leadership in the areas of extramural funding strategies and trends. Finally, the position will also support junior leadership in the areas of extramural funding strategies and trends. Finally, the position will also support junior faculty to assist them in outlining a roadmap of funding programs to help launch their research programs, proposal organization and editing, and communication with the sponsors. The position collaborates with the Director of Communications on outreach to college constituencies; with the Assistant Dean for Development on contracts with prospective donors and research sponsors; with Associate Director of Strategic Partnerships on collaborations and research support; and with Physical Planning Liaison to plan equipment, facilities and infrastructure grants. The position also serves as the primary contract for CNAS research collaborations and partnerships with other universities, federal/state/local agencies and UC campuses.

Key Responsibilities

Description % Time
Provides guidance and counsel on wide variety of highly complex research administration matters to principal investigators, senior departmental administrators and less experienced department staff. Leads education and outreach activities to facilitate connection between faculty and relevant programs/funding opportunities and promote research to external entities.
  • Given a senior level of experience with grant writing and awards, acts as a mentor to less experienced PIs aiming to increase proposal production and award rate. Provides guidance related to proposal fit and content. Establishes research, education, and outreach connections between UCR and external collaborators and stakeholders.

Department Role (DR): Leads the organization, planning, establishment and monitoring of fiscal budget control of contracts and grants administration, submissions, budgets, support documents, gifts, endowments and privately funded projects for faculty research programs.
  • Authors non-technical content & develops boiler-plate text for supporting documents typically for submission of large multi-disciplinary proposals. Assists principal investigators with conceptualization of projects and lends support via edits and recommendations to add strength. In addition, uses knowledge of PI research background to establish research teams that harness research strengths & increase the probability of proposed success.

  • Identifies research areas & funding programs important to the maintenance and strategic expansion of the college's funding portfolio. Advises Dean and Divisional Deans of emerging research areas that can fertilize growth of the research, education and outreach mission

(CR): Maintains professional relationships with sponsor representatives. Delivers specialized training and/or develops content for education workshops in the area of research administration. Leads broad initiatives to develop successful proposal processes and resources for researches.
  • Promotes the visibility of the college's research enterprise and facilitates interactions between faculty and agencies while developing strong relationships with program officers. On campus, mobilizes faculty to initiate multi-disciplinary research collaborations. organizes workshops and delivers presentations on major grant programs to ensure guidelines are understood, best practices shared and extend advice from external program officers and past awardees.

Central Role (CR): Administratively reviews complex grant or contract proposals budgets and awards, obtains/verifies necessary compliance approvals.
  • Interfaces as needed with the Foundation Development team within University Advancement regarding the distribution of private foundation opportunities as appropriate to the dean, divisional deans, chairs and/or individual faculty. In addition, interfaces with Vice Chancellor of Research & Economic Development (VCRED) administrative team regarding limited submission processes to maximize opportunities for CNAS faculty.

(CR): Approves/signs-off submission of pre-award update information requested by sponsor representatives before issue of awards.

(DR): Administers, in coordination with central and departmental administrators, the administrative and financial aspects of complex, awarded projects with broad impact.
