Essential Functions
Essential Function | % Time |
---|---|
Administration of High-Performance Compute (HPC) Systems | 40 |
Systems administration, maintenance and upgrades of a high-performance Linux cluster, as well as several production servers located in a state-of-the-art server room of the bioinformatics core facility. This includes the installation and troubleshooting of Linux/Unix OSs, open-source applications for bioinformatics research and hardware upgrades. In addition, the incumbent will be involved in the optimization of software tools to improve their performance and scalability for parallel computing environments. | |
Large Scale Data Storage | 30 |
Management and upgrade of a rapidly growing large-scale disk storage and backup system that warehouses critical scientific information for over 200 scientists. This includes the installation and optimization of parallel file systems and disk storage hardware to expand the facility's high-availability data storage system to a several petabyte system over the next few years. In addition, existing data-backup routines will be optimized. | |
Development of Parallel Computing Software | 20 |
Installation, maintenance and development of queuing and load balancing software for parallel computing tasks on the facility's Linux cluster. The incumbent will implement new algorithms for parallel computing into software applications, integrate custom modifications into existing open-source code and write data analysis pipelines to automate complex data analysis strategies. Several computer languages will be applied, such as C/C++, Perl, Python, Java, etc. to real-life research problems. | |
Network Management and Data Security | 10 |
Installation, upgrade and maintenance of the facility's network and security infrastructure. This includes the management of access control and information exchange protocols between the different hardware and software services offered by the facility to internal (UCR-wide) and external users. The incumbent will be responsible to maintain an efficient firewall to protect all networked resources against viruses and intruders. |
