Stick shift vehicle and gem cart.
Power mowers, riding mowers, edgers, trimmers, blowers, vacuums, roto-tillers, line trimmers, chain saws, and all power tools common to landscaping.

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the Groundskeeping Supervisor, the Groundskeeper will ensure the safety and security of residents and staff by maintaining the hard and soft landscape of the UCR Housing facilities, as well as maintaining the esthetic beauty of the landscape and buildings. This will be accomplished by mowing, edging, tree pruning/trimming, pulling weeds, planting flowers, shrubbery and trees, and maintaining all by watering, fertilizing and staking. The Groundskeeper will maintain the housing irrigation system by repairing/replacing sprinkler heads, risers, broken lines, valves, timers and controllers. The Groundskeeper will also trim and remove dead trees including roots, vacuum, pressure wash, sweep or blow down hard surface areas, install stepping stones and work to assist with the control/eradication of insects, rodents and weeds.

This position is part of UCR Housing, Dining & Residential Services (HDRS) which is one of the campus' largest units, providing housing to about 30% of our students, dining for entire campus in residential and retail facilities, programming and support through a robust residential life program, conferencing and catering services, and child development care to our faculty, staff and students. HDRS employs 450 career employees and over 800 student employees. HDRS departments include Assignments & Accounts, Business & Financial Services, Capital Programs, Catering Services, Child Development, Conference Services, Dining Services, Information Technologies, Marketing, Operations, and Residential Life. HDRS reports to the Division of Student Affairs.

The HDRS Operations Department maintains all facilities and services for over 1.5 million square feet. The selected candidate will work with a team of committed, results-oriented staff focused on providing excellent customer service and creating a safe, sustainable & well maintained environment.

Essential Functions

Groundskeeping 60
Trim/prune trees, shrubs and flowers using ladders, hand and power tools. Pull weeds, rake planters, remove clippings and debris from grounds and dispose of them. Plant flowers, shrubs and trees and maintain same by watering, fertilizing and staking. Under the direction of the Landscaping Supervisor, work on special projects such as, but not limited to, fertilizing, planting (turf, trees, flower and shrubbery), control/eradication of insects, rodents, weeds, prepare soil and install stepping stones. Work with the Housekeeping Team to maintain the cleanliness of the entrances of the Residence Halls by keeping them free of hazards and trash.

Equipment 25
Use power blowers, vacuums, hand brooms and rakes to pick-up all litter of hard and soft-scape areas of the UCR Housing facilities. Such areas include, trash containers, sidewalks, tennis/hockey courts, parking lots, turf and planter areas. Repair and maintain landscaping sprinklers/irrigation system by repairing/replacing as needed sprinkler heads, risers, broken lines and valves. Adjust, repair, install, set and maintain sprinkler system timers and controls, manual, electric and computerized.


Equipment Maintenance 5
Maintain landscaping power and hand tools by inspecting for safety related problems, sharpening, routine oil/filter changes, blade changing, lubricating and minor repairs or complete motor replacement if needed. Must return all equipment and tools to storeroom in good condition. Report all observed unsafe conditions (i.e. broken glass, damaged porches or steps, excess water, fire, etc.). Keep shop and work areas safe and clear of tripping hazards.

Landscape and Hardscape 5
Mow and edge lawns using riding and hand-operated lawn mowers.
Communication 5
Communication and work order developing/closing in English by computer generated work requests and e-mails. Maintain positive communication with residents about work in progress, as needed. Also, communicate promptly with your supervisor and staff on problems, hazards, and problems with day-to-day operations. May be called to work overtime on weekends, holidays, weeknights, emergency call-backs when necessary. Perform various additional tasks as required.


Minimum Requirements

One year experience in grounds maintenance or gardening; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to communicate effectively in the English language with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.

Skilled experience with the safe use and maintenance of all landscaping hand/power tools such as, but not limited to, mowers (including riding type), edgers, hedge trimmers, chain saws, power blowers/vacuums, roto-tillers, rakes, saws, clippers, seed and fertilizer spreaders.

Skill and knowledge using mechanical tools required to maintain all landscaping related equipment such as hand wrenches, gas/oil mixing, and hand files.
