Position Purpose

Working under the direction of the Director, Constituent Research & Development, Office of Advancement Services, the Senior Prospect Research Analyst supports the Development program by performing research functions in support of the Development staff's efforts to manage, identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift prospects.

Work with development staff to maintain the prospect management system.

Proactively audit data and work with development staff to ensure correct entry.

Research/Analysis/Evaluation 30
Analyze and assess information from local, national, and international print and online resources; subscription services; financial and philanthropy reports; references (both printed and electronic); other Internet resources; and University files.

Utilize quantitative criteria, including income, assets, liabilities, and giving patterns to evaluate each identified prospect's potential and propensity to give.

Identify, obtain, and interpret detailed financial and legal disclosures including corporate reports (10K, proxy statements), foundation tax reports (IRS 990-PF), and state, county, and court documents (corporate records, assessment records, probate cases).

Accessing complex state-of-the-art database services (WealthEngine, Lexis-Nexis, etc.), design effective search strategies based on variable database-specific search protocols to identify corporate, foundation, and individual major gift prospects.

Employ data mining techniques to further efforts to identify the best major gift partners, target the best donors, and achieve the best return-on-investment.
Writing and Consultation 20
As a result of research and analysis, write documents (profiles, bios and project summaries) using style, grammar, and content appropriate to the specific audience.

Interpret and translate complex financial, legal and corporate language into easily comprehensible terms while adhering to University standards of discretion and confidentiality.

Extract and communicate key information which directs the cultivation and solicitation strategy.

Append prospect knowledge gleaned through research and analysis (e.g., ratings, interests, and relationships) appropriately to the Advancement database so that it is accessible to campus-wide fundraising staff to be used to develop future cultivation strategies.

As a liaison to a portfolio of development directors, consult with a diverse system of contacts on matters related to prospect identification and research analysis that are used to form prospect cultivation and solicitation strategies.
Major Gift Prospect Identification 20
Identify sources of major gift ($25,000+) private support for fundraising initiatives.

Recommend strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major gifts.

Advise development officers of interdisciplinary campus relationships, interests, capacity and other areas which influence or impact cultivation and solicitation strategies.

Serve as a member of Prospect Meetings as required.

UC Riverside is seeking experienced prospect researchers. Working under the direction of the Director, Constituent Research & Development, Office of Advancement Services, the Senior Prospect Research Analyst supports the Development program by performing research functions in support of the Development staff's efforts to manage, identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift prospects. There are two positions to be filled.
Posted Minimum Requirements
Three to five years of experience in prospect research, development, library research or related field preferably in an academic environment.
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated ability to think critically and analytically in order to initiate and perform complex analyses.
Advanced analytical skills and ability to interpret/analyze complex financial and legal disclosures, technical and trade documents, including court and tax records, annual reports, SEC filings, and real property files.
Skill in managing the prospect management system, proactively auditing information to ensure a clear picture of prospect statuses
Skill in analyzing and organizing information to identify philanthropic patterns, tendencies, and relationships among individuals, corporations, and foundations.
Ability to recall, recognize, and communicate interrelated information pertaining to University benefactors and prospects.
Knowledge of philosophical and practical aspects of institutional advancement research methods.
Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and develop proactive prospecting methodologies to support organization goals; identify prospects (through constituent list segmentation, push technology, electronic database screening, and peer/constituency screening and rating); and understand wealth indicators, including income (estimated or public) and assets.
Knowledge of gift vehicles (cash, securities, real estate, in-kind, personal property); types of planned giving vehicles (trusts, bequests, pooled income funds); appropriate fund-raising strategies for different organization types; and volunteer roles (identification, training, recognition and support).
Excellent customer service skills.
Exceptional writing and oral communication skills. Demonstrated skill in writing and editing logical, detailed, and analytical reports that support planning and decision making.
Ability to prepare information in appropriate form for different audiences.
Knowledge of relational database systems and the types of data necessary to support constituent relations.
Demonstrated skill in utilizing multiple electronic resources such as Lexis/Nexis, Dialog, and Dun and Bradstreet to locate and compile business and biographic information.
Strong computer skills using Excel, MS Word, and the Web.
Knowledge of information available from county and state offices and other public and private agencies, both national and international.
Knowledge of principal biographical and corporate resources, data bases, and other reference materials held by research libraries.
Demonstrated experience working with a culturally diverse workforce and constituency.
Ability and skill to exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with others and to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Ability to work in a team environment.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize work and independently manage multiple, diverse and competing priorities while meeting deadlines; plan and develop meaningful objectives; and integrate the work of prospect research into overall advancement office goals.
Strong problem solving skills and demonstrated ability to work under pressure.
Knowledge of ethics statements by Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA), Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and other appropriate associations.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive information.
