Position Purpose

The UCR ARTSblock Exhibition Designer/Preparator is responsible for design interpretation and all aspects of preparation and production of the UCR/CMP, Sweeney Art Gallery, and the Barbara and Art Culver Center for the Arts exhibitions to include organization, planning, and purchasing of required materials for fabrication of exhibition furnishings and installations. This position works with the UCR/CMP Curator and the Sweeney Art Gallery Director/Curator to prepare physical and conceptual designs for contemporary art, historical and interactive exhibitions. Exhibitions may also include off-site locations on UCR's main campus and UCR's Palm Desert Graduate Center. The UCR ARTSblock Exhibition Designer directly supervises Museum Preparators, students, interns, and volunteers in exhibition design, preparation, and production. This position has the responsibility to ensure the artistic and conceptual integrity for all ARTSblock exhibitions and helps maintain the institution's leadership in the field of contemporary museum design. Included in these responsibilities are working closely with other staff, such as registrars, on packing and unpacking, crating, and shipping of all incoming and outgoing museum objects for international and domestic exhibits; general facilities and exhibition maintenance. The Exhibition Designer is also responsible for the exhibition schedule.

Exhibition Design and Installation 50
The installation and design of exhibitions and related materials will be the primary focus with this position. Design of exhibits will include the development of shop drawings, floor plans and models for all exhibition and related programmatic projects using various drafting tools. Works with the UCR/CMP Curator and Sweeney Art Gallery Director/Curator, along with other staff members, such as the curator of collections, registrar, and director of digital media, in the coordination of exhibition schedules with the installation crew (part-time employees, students, interns, and volunteers). The UCR ARTSblock Exhibition Designer will assist in design, management, and supervision of all matters associated with exhibition installation, preparation, and production at the UCR/CMP, the Sweeney Art Gallery, the Culver Center of the Arts, temporary museum exhibitions at other international and domestic venues, and special traveling exhibitions.
Exhibition Organization and Planning 25
Works with UCR/CMP Curator and Sweeney Art Gallery Director/Curator to interpret project budgets, exhibition designs and shop drawings in order to project installation schedules and deadlines and to facilitate the packing, shipping and receiving of exhibition and collection materials. This position also includes recruitment/selection and supervision of interns, volunteers, and other part-time museum preparators in order to meet final exhibition and programmatic deadlines. Will also seek estimates, place orders and purchase construction and installation materials and conservation supplies necessary to successfully meet exhibition demands and budgetary constraints, and the ability to work within a limited budget.
General Facilities and Exhibition Maintenance 15
Assumes independent responsibility for the overall maintenance of the UCR/CMP museum building and exhibitions as well as the Sweeney Art Gallery and Culver building and exhibitions on a daily basis. This includes: lighting, ensuring proper working conditions for display of exhibit objects (frames, mounts, mats, fine art objects and installations), exhibition equipment, furnishings, fixtures, and vitrines; graphics, labels/text panels and exhibition/gallery security devices. Works directly with ARTSblock Administrative Director and Sweeney Art Gallery Director/Curator to coordinate and facilitate both minor and major public gallery/facility upkeep, repairs, and renovations. May be asked to assist with the set up of ARTSblock events and programs.
Other Exhibition Preparation 10
Physical preparation (size, dry mount, order vinyls, etc.) of all descriptive text or basic object labels for items exhibited for the collection or on loan from other institutions or individuals; preparation of shipment packing or crating (requiring some construction at times) for all collection items, other museum items, and items on loan to the museum or gallery; arranges international and domestic shipment schedules and shipment of items on loan to and from the museum or gallery in a timely manner to meet multiple and simultaneous exhibit deadlines. May be required to take UCR based training in risk management, performance management, and purchasing.

Bachelors Degree in Art, History of Art, Museum Sciences or related fields and four years of experience in curatorial work, including one year in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
