Position Purpose

The Maintenance B - Electrical Shop Supervisor oversees projects requiring skilled electrical/high voltage maintenance, construction, retrofit, repair and tenant improvements for UCR campus buildings. Supervises the maintenance, repair, installation or modification of industrial electrical equipment. Utilizes Physical Plant work order system to assign and track all work orders on campus. Reviews work orders, making work assignments to shop personnel based on the specific required skills for the project. Oversees the maintenance and operation of the campus primary and secondary distribution systems. Performs all job duties in adherence to all University and Departmental safety guidelines.

Electrical Maintenance Oversight 50
Utilizes Physical Plant work order system to assign and track all work orders on Campus. Reviews work orders, making work assignments to shop personnel who have expertise in that area. Oversees the maintenance and operation of the campus primary and secondary distribution systems. Reviews and comments on construction and renovation projects as impacts campus electrical systems. Plans or coordinates electrical power interruptions including shut downs and lock out/tag out procedures.

Schedules maintenance on the University's electrical systems. Contributes to design of new electrical distribution systems and keeps updated information data as to loads and capacity of each distribution system. Maintains the master electrical map of the campus electrical distribution systems and updates the map as changes occur, allowing trouble shooting of problem areas.

Plans for annual & periodic outages which require managing several contractors with the goal of executing parallel jobs with high quality results in a short period of time. Coordinate activities with campus customers, Architects & Engineers, Physical Plant Administration and shop supervisors for maximum plant safety and efficiency.

Maintains working knowledge of NEC, UBC, ADA, NFPA, safety, EPA and other codes and regulations as applicable to a University setting in Riverside, California. Maintains a working knowledge of hazardous materials handling and disposal, including PCBs, asbestos, lead and mold.
Shop Administration and Supervision 40
Ensures accurate record-keeping including use of computerized maintenance management system (FAMIS), inventory procedures, labor and material records, estimating, etc. Establishes and maintains an effective preventive maintenance system. Ensures proper safety procedures are followed at all times.

Oversees the Electrical Shop by hiring, training, performing performance appraisals, and making work assignments to shop personnel. Ensures that all apprentice electricians receive required skills and safety training as appropriate.

Ensures that all electrical work meets the requirements of the National Electrical Code by supervising, reviewing, and controlling all electrical projects performed by Physical Plant Services Electrical Shop.

Orders replacement and repair parts, working with Purchasing or Storehouse on receiving the parts required to bring equipment back on line. Ensures that the shop expenditures are maintained within the authorized shop budget.

Oversees the testing of electrical safety equipment such as rubber gloves, insulation poles, etc. Makes recommendations for replacement on defective equipment as needed. Prepares reports on equipment needing major repairs or replacement. Responds to campus concerns regarding equipment malfunctions, shop personnel or emergency situations.
Electrical Work and Other Duties 10
Performs electrical work, on occasion as staffing needs and work orders necessitate, on electrical shop work orders, preventive maintenance, inspections, test operations, sustaining services, troubleshooting and repairs and/or replacement of complex control and mechanical systems of electrical power and control systems. Performs installation of new or modified electrical wiring and devices.

Participates in the design of assemblies, systems, equipment and/or controls, electrical and/or mechanical. Prepares drawings in detail showing measurements and materials with information obtained from blueprints and verbal instructions.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Four years' work experience as a journey-level electrician/high-voltage electrician or completion of formal apprenticeship training and an additional three years in an electrical maintenance supervisory role; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Demonstrated understanding of electrical work; knowledge of NEC standards and industry safety standards, codes and regulations. Demonstrated work experience in high voltage environments equal to or greater than 600 volts, (12-15KV) working in and around electrical equipment and distribution lines such as transformers, switches, circuit breakers, recording instruments and control systems. Knowledge of technical practices in order to plan, layout, and complete maintenance or repair needed for high voltage equipment and lines.

Knowledge of electrical and electronic theory; series and parallel, circuits, line loading, line losses, and instruments used in shop and trade practices. Knowledge of troubleshooting and locating defects and trouble spots. Ability to install, modify, test, repair, troubleshoot, and maintain high voltage electric power controlling equipment and/or distribution lines without more than normal supervision.

Skill in using and maintaining electrical tools and test equipment such as oscillators, phase sticks and rotation meters, digital test equipment, fault finding equipment, ampmeters, voltmeters, meggers, graphic recorders, dressing tools, wire tongs, wire tong supports, insulated tension links, tie sticks, and insulated hoods/covers and tools.
