Position Purpose

The University of California, Riverside (UCR) Libraries is seeking nominations and applications for an experienced, energetic, and innovative professional to fill the position of Infrastructure Systems Engineer in the Information Technology Infrastructure Unit of the Information Technology and Systems Division.

The UCR Libraries is building a team of intensely collaborative, forward-thinking colleagues dedicated to providing excellent services to our students, faculty, and community members in a rapidly evolving information environment. The successful candidate will be technologically sophisticated; committed to problem-solving in local, regional, national, and international arenas; and able to develop innovative solutions to complex problems.

Reporting to the IT Infrastructure Manager, the Infrastructure Systems Engineer will provide technology services to the UCR University Libraries organization. Duties include, but are not limited to, administering and supporting the VMware cluster, Windows and Linux servers, Active Directory forest, backup and recovery systems, firewalls, VPNs, network switches, SANs, System Center (Configuration Manager and Operations Manager), shared services, and various aspects of deployed workstations and peripheral devices.

The Infrastructure team operates by developing, enhancing, and using repeatable and well-documented processes and procedures to achieve an efficient, reliable, and sustainable information technology environment. Best practices and security are included in all our efforts. Teamwork, collaboration, and the ability to tactfully communicate and share ideas with an interdisciplinary group of staff, patrons, and colleagues is essential. Our environment is dynamic, challenging, and requires the ability to handle shifting priorities. Occasional efforts outside of normal business hours will be required.

The University Libraries organization includes four physical libraries on the Riverside campus. The infrastructure includes 70 virtual machines and over 500 workstations.

Essential Functions

Administer a production VMware cluster.
Configure and administer a variety of SANs.
Administer and monitor Windows and Linux servers.
Ensure security protocols are followed on all infrastructure servers and systems.
Administer credentials on a variety of workstations and servers.
Monitor and optimize virtual machine and host operating system performance.
Review system logs to identify anomalies.
Administer and enhance the Active Directory forest.
Utilize System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) in systems management efforts.
Install, update, and manage application software packages.
Monitor production systems with tools such as System Center Operations Manager (SCOM).
Organize and manage rack data and electrical cabling according to industry best practices.
Administer and manage the backup and recovery system.
Enhance and test a robust disaster recovery plan.
Support and participate in workstation system configuration, imaging, and deployments throughout the Libraries.
Adhere to best practices in all infrastructure efforts.
Administer and manage SSL certificates.
Research new technology to determine potential application to digital initiatives.
Review and revise standards to conform to industry best practices.
Create and enhance repeatable procedures by documenting technical processes.
Focus on technical excellence.

Minimum Requirements
