Position Purpose

The University of California, Riverside (UCR) Libraries is seeking nominations and applications for an experienced, energetic, and innovative professional to fill the position of Web Developer and User Interface Designer in the Web Services and Design Unit of the Information Technology and Systems Division.

The UCR Libraries is building a team of intensely collaborative, forward-thinking colleagues dedicated to providing excellent services to our students, faculty, and community members in a rapidly evolving information environment. The successful candidate will be technologically sophisticated; committed to problem-solving in local, regional, national, and international arenas; and able to develop innovative solutions to complex problems.

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Information Technology and Systems, the Web Developer and User Interface Designer will provide technology services to the UCR University Libraries organization and will have strong graphic design, website, and editorial skills. Duties include, but are not limited to, supporting, designing, and developing internal and public websites, web-based applications, social media sites, and multimedia content. Innovative applications will include new initiatives in digital collections, scholarly communication, and resource discovery.

The Web Developer and User Interface Designer will work closely with the Libraries' Web Development Management Team, and will operate by developing, enhancing, testing, and using repeatable and well-documented processes and procedures to achieve an efficient, reliable, and sustainable web services environment. Best practices and security are included in all our efforts. Teamwork, collaboration, and the ability to tactfully communicate and share ideas with an interdisciplinary group of staff, patrons, and colleagues is essential. Our environment is dynamic, challenging, and requires the ability to handle shifting priorities. Occasional efforts outside of normal business hours may be required.

The University Libraries organization includes four physical libraries on the Riverside campus. The infrastructure includes 70 virtual machines, over 500 workstations, and more than two-dozen web-based applications and databases.

Essential Functions

Design, build, and support websites, web-based applications, and multimedia content for a variety of devices.
Front-end coding using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related tools.
Manage the web presence of the University Libraries; ensuring content is accurate, consistent, up-to-date, and meets campus standards for web communications.
Work closely with project teams to deliver user experiences based on coordinated goals and audience needs.
Develop mock ups and prototypes to elicit feedback on proposed user interfaces and workflows.
Meet and communicate with project teams to plan web strategy and execution.
Utilize accessibility and usability guidelines, such as ADA.
Create multimedia content for websites, mobile devices, and digital signage.
Capture photos and video using various recording devices, including SLR cameras.
Develop multimedia content using tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, and Flash.
Design webpage layouts that comply with best practices and style guidelines.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) using current techniques.
Engage social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+) in a consistent and sustainable manner.
Track social media usage and gather performance metrics.
Keep pace with emerging multimedia, mobile, and display technologies.
Follow trends in digital communications, user interface design, web development, and social media.
Research selected new technologies to determine potential application to web services and digital initiatives.
Adopt new technologies in concert with the Web Development Management Team, software developers, and the IT Infrastructure team.
Enhance access and functionality to all sections of the website.
Refactor legacy web designs to improve support, performance, and sustainability.
Coordinate the creation and vetting of website content.
Conduct focus groups, define scope of work, define site architecture, and coordinate content development efforts.
Create posts for 'News and Tips' to assist staff with creating new content.
Create and support WordPress sites and blogs.
Administration of internal web-based user accounts, including the Libguides, Centaur, and Library Stats applications.
Use Google Analytics and other tools to understand and optimize web usage.
Prototype techniques that project analytical data in a graphical format, with a focus on techniques that engage a diverse group of interdisciplinary audiences in an innovative and creative fashion.
Design and update templates for the Omeka digital collection content management system.
Assist with digital asset management systems (DAMS).
Provide clear and complete documentation to ensure repeatable and sustainable processes, procedures, and workflows.
Project Management and Collaboration 20
Actively work with the Web Development Management Team to assess needs, define website content goals , design solutions, develop realistic schedules, determine resources, evaluate risks, request budgets, and collectively agree on priorities.
Manage the web production process and workflow, from planning to implementation.
Establish process workflow for authoring, collecting, approving, and publishing content.
Provide reports on web analytics at regular intervals.
Develop training materials using a variety of delivery methods, including multimedia tutorials.
Train staff on the use of website content creation tools, including WordPress and Microsoft Office.
Skill in generating multiple approaches for specific creative goals.
Customer Service and Support 10

Work tactfully with an interdisciplinary team of staff, faculty, students, and library users.
