Position Purpose

Under the general direction of the Reserve Site Director, assists with daily operational aspects of the Reserve Sites; James San Jacinto Mountains Reserve and Oasis de los Osos, including administration and user management, facilities and information systems, biological monitoring, research and educational programs, database management, museum collections, and public outreach activities.

Essential Functions

Reserve Support and Management 40
Assist the Center Director as needed with visitors for research, teaching and outreach activities, including coordinating and supervising volunteers. Manage user paperwork including sign-in sheets, billing invoices, application forms, and correspondence as needed. Facilitate user arrival/departure, including scheduling lodging/laboratory use, communicating Center rules and regulations, check-out inspections , and billing or fee collection. Support researchers and class equipment needs as needed (e.g., issue field, laboratory or presentation equipment). Assume responsibility for operation of the Reserve in the absence of the Director, including operation of main office computers and telecommunications. Review and contribute to documents as requested by Director. Select and purchase supplies and equipment, perform accounting tasks as needed and maintain all files and records. Assist in the preparation of management plans, budget, and Annual Report. Provide assistance to Director in public relations, fund-raising, grant writing and policy development. Assume responsibility for additional tasks assigned or delegated by the Director.
Facilities and Grounds Management 25
General maintenance and upgrades of instrumentation including weather stations, solar power systems, water systems. Also patrolling and mending fence lines, maintaining roads, trails and buildings. Maintains administrative office including all computer, fax, copier operations, office supplies, telephone, email and internet communications. Conducts inventory and inspection of fire and safety equipment and supplies; being liaison with UCR Environmental Health & Safety and with UCR BNN Administration. Assist with care and upkeep of all vehicles. Coordinate with vendors for the reserves. Supervise and work with various contractors. Negotiate property lines boundaries and road easements with neighboring land owners including fencing, etc.
Inventory, Monitoring, Restoration and Collections Programs 15
Manage and enhance monitoring flora and fauna at the James and Oasis de los Osos Reserves and supporting databases, species lists, phenology records, on-site transects and meteorological data. Conduct literature review; updates reserve site publications lists and collections. Oversee habitat restoration programs including invasive species control. Supervise volunteer or seasonal restoration/resource management crews.
Database and Other Information Management 10
Maintenance of database files for museum collections, environmental monitoring and research programs. Develop and maintain GPS and GIS mapping and databases. Update website and website databases. Assist to develop and manage social media sites. Catalogue and organize library, including map and James Estate collections. Conduct literature reviews; update Reserve publications lists and regional bibliographies.
Research and Education Support 10
Under the direction of the site Director: assist in organizing, teaching or attending workshops, meetings and conferences. Develop displays, presentations, and publications (e.g., brochures, guide books, proceedings); provide technical assistance and comments to government agencies as requested. Prepare and present programs on aspects of natural history and reserve site activities to classes and other visitors. Participate in public outreach activities including teaching, guided tours and lectures/demonstrations. Collaborate with federal and state agencies and other institutions on regional research, education and environmental management issues.

Graduation with BS degree with specialization in biology, botany, zoology, geography or comparable field and one year experience, and curatorial work or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Proven experience in collecting, analyzing and publishing scientific data. Working knowledge of statistical software. Computer experience with word processor, spreadsheet and database operating systems and commonly used office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Filemaker Pro, PowerPoint, Internet, email).

Basic understanding of state and federal agencies and regulatory policies that apply to research and land management issues. Ability to learn names of plants, animals, geological formations, places and basic natural history of area surrounding the reserves. Knowledge of management of museum data collections.

Must be able to work independently with little direction. Ability to guide volunteers and others in reserve work.

Ability to perform work outside, under adverse weather conditions. Knowledge of basic maintenance techniques for electrical, plumbing, fencing, roads and physical plant. Able to stay overnight at reserve site when necessary. Must be able to operate and/or willing to operate all kinds of equipment needed to perform duties.

Must have a valid California driver's license, and must be able to drive manual transmission vehicles, and tractors.
