Position Purpose

The Health Professions Advising Center provides information, advising, and support for students who aspire to graduate/professional programs in the health professions and wish to enhance their academic and extracurricular preparation. Professional staff and peer mentors are available to guide students as they plan their pre-health professions course work, health related experiences, service work, and research in preparation for applying to programs.

The director of the UCR Health Professions Advising Center (HPAC) provides vision and direction for health professions advising at UCR and is responsible for the management and supervision of this Center serving approximately 5,000 students annually through workshops, pre-health peer mentors, guest speaker programs, and other events and activities that support pre-health professions students. The director also oversees individual health professions advising of over 1,000 students annually, including oversight and on-going implementation of the interactive health professions advising electronic portfolio system AdviseStream.

The HPAC director develops and manages program budgets in consultation with the Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs in the UCR School of Medicine and supervises two staff (health professions advisor and advisor/coordinator), two interns, and 35-40 undergraduate students selected to be peer mentors. The director is responsible for evaluating program effectiveness for continuous improvement and serves as a recognized campus resource for health professions advising.

Guide students through professional school application process: developing a personal essay, asking for letters of recommendation, secondaries, interviews, etc.

Refer students to appropriate campus resources including Career Center, Financial Aid, and Academic Resource Center

Write letters of recommendation for select students applying to health professions programs, summer programs, and scholarship opportunities

Provide leadership and vision for the Health Professions Advising Center serving 5,000 students considering careers in the health professions

Develop a balance of professional staff advising, peer mentors, and workshops and other presentations to inform a large population of undergraduate students of admissions requirements for health professions programs and preparation to become a competitive applicant

Identify and implement effective strategies to inform students about health professions opportunities, general academic and extracurricular preparation, admissions tests, and application processes for health professions schools

Monitor office traffic and student participation in professional staff advising, workshops, peer mentor program and other HPAC services; oversee creation of quarterly and annual reports

Evaluate program effectiveness to understand the program's impact on student success and development

Develop collaborations and initiate regular meetings with university partners, including colleges, academic departments, and student services departments to support student development and success

Serve as a recognized resource for advising pre-health professions students to campus departments and to student organizations

Meet with colleagues from other UC campuses, institutions, and professional organizations and stay abreast of best practices and literature in order to continuously improve and apply best practices to the Health Professions Advising Center

Develop workshops series on preparing to become a competitive applicant, professional school applications, interviewing skills, personal statements, summer programs, and internship opportunities and other relevant topics for pre-health students

Invite guest speakers and health professionals to discuss a wide range of topics including leadership, public health, ethics, etc.

Oversee ongoing development and implementation of AdviseStream, an interactive health professions advising electronic portfolio system

Partner with appropriate campus programs (Transfer Center, University Honors Program, Learning Center, Medical Scholars Program, Post-baccalaureate Premedical Program, etc.) to ensure that students from diverse and socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds are actively participating in the Health Professions Advising Center

Develop promotional materials (brochures, newsletters, listserv announcement) and oversee website development and maintenance

Create and provide presentations for new and prospective students at orientations, and other outreach and recruitment events

Represent UCR and the SOM at health professions conferences

Write regular reports on the goals, objectives and outcomes of the Health Professions Advising Center

In consultation with the Senior Associate Dean, evaluate program effectiveness on an on-going basis using appropriate assessment tools

Oversee the maintenance of databases/spreadsheets monitoring usage patterns, professional school applications, acceptances, etc.

Collaborate with the SOM IT Technology and Communications to support the technology, communication, and database needs of the Health Professions Advising Center

Oversee collection and interpretation of statistical data on UCR students applying to health professions schools using data from AMCAS, PharmCAS, SOPHAS, etc. and provide information to appropriate campus committees, deans, faculty, staff, and student organizations

Develop and manage program budgets and establish budget priorities in consultation with the Senior Associate Dean

Ensure proper fiscal controls are established and maintained, and manage funds in compliance with campus, SOM, and program goals and objectives

Minimum Requirements

2. Minimum three years health professions advising experience
3. Demonstrated experience with student academic program administration in a research university setting
4. Demonstrated experience with the admissions process for professional schools (e.g., medical, veterinary, pharmacy, dental, etc.) and knowledge of health professions centralized application services
5. Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of student development, student academic support, and academic and curriculum requirements to help students achieve academic success
6. Demonstrated skill in preparing comprehensive and in-depth analysis of complex, sensitive, and multi-faceted issues, particularly under tight time constraints
7. Demonstrated skill to write reports on program performance using data generated by program evaluations and/or software applications
