Position Purpose

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) Assistant Director for Academic Partnership Programs manages overall coordination and operation of the Academic Partnership Programs unit which specializes in academic support programs that are driven by partnerships with faculty and academic units to facilitate student success. The Assistant Director provides leadership, planning and supervision for campus-wide programs including Early Assist, Summer Bridge, Math Preparation Programs, Math Advisory Exam and Intermediate Algebra Workshop, Upper Division and Graduate Student Support Programs, Standardized Examination Preparation Workshops, and Writing Support Programs. The incumbent directly supervises 3-5 FTE staff (level 2 & 3 Student Affairs Officer and Student Affairs Officer Supervisors) and indirectly supervises 10-12 full-time, contracted and casual part-time employees; managing an annual operating budget of approximately $1M. The Assistant Director may represent the Director in meetings with faculty, administration, and student leadership. The Assistant Director reports to the Academic Resource Center Director.

The UCR Academic Resource Center provides student academic support programs and services including supplemental instruction, tutoring assistance, peer mentorship, study skills instruction, early assist, math placement and instruction, summer bridge, and intervention programs for all students, including students at-risk or in academic difficulty. The department has 20 FTE professional staff and over 200 part-time student employees annually.

Provide leadership and vision for Academic Partnership Programs, in consultation with the Director, Undergraduate Education, and university partners, which includes Early Assist, Summer Bridge, Math Preparation Programs (Math Advisory Exam and Intermediate Algebra Workshops), Upper Division and Graduate Student Support Programs (Standardized Exam Prep Workshops), and Writing Support Programs. Translate that vision into tangible and well-articulated plans, including the Academic Partnership Programs unit's goals, programs, guidelines for participation, and performance reports and evaluations. Assist Director with preparation of long and short term planning for the overall department.

Manage the day-to-day operations of Academic Partnership Programs unit.

Prepare regular reports on Academic Partnership Program unit's goals, objectives and outcomes and distribute as necessary.

Serve as member of the Academic Resource Center management team, which includes Director, Assistant Director for Academic Partnership Programs, Assistant Director for Academic Support Programs, and Business and Finance manager.

Develop and manage Academic Partnership Programs and program budgets, in consultation with ARC Director, Program Coordinators, Business and Finance Manager, and the CFAO of Undergraduate Education. Submit balanced budget plans for the Academic Partnership Programs unit to Director for approval annually and quarterly. Make equitable and effective fiscal decisions.

As assigned, assume responsibility in absence of Director for department operations, and represent Director at meetings with university partners and at Undergraduate Education Directors meetings; advise students, faculty, and university partners of Academic Resource Center departmental policies and procedures.
Program Development 30
Oversee the development and coordination of academic support initiatives from the Academic Resource Center and its university partners to students.

Prepare quarterly and annual program reports for all programs in Academic Partnership Programs that include program performance, participation data, and opportunities for improvement. Ensure that data from evaluations are used to constantly improve operations in the unit. Ensure distribution of reports to appropriate partners, and that they are incorporated into the departmental and unit planning process. Regularly update partners on the progress of new programs through meetings and other means.

Establish goals, learning outcomes, budget projections, and planning for programs in Academic Partnership Programs, based on evolving academic support needs of students and enrollment growth on the UCR campus. Oversee performance and needs assessments for all programs within the unit.

In collaboration with the ARC Director, Director of the University Writing Program, and Undergraduate Education, develop and articulate a plan and vision for the Writing Support Programs pilot initiative. Articulate plans for Writing Support Programs to potential university partners including specific course instructors.

Actively collaborate with colleges, departments, and Undergraduate Education to develop and implement responsive programs that support students in their pursuit of academic success.

Use new and developing learning technologies to create efficiencies in service delivery and increase student access to services, in partnership with Director and Assistant Director for Academic Partnership Programs.

Serve as one of the campus experts on the creation of academic partnerships in the pursuit of student academic support, study skills assistance, and support to at-risk students. Upon request, participate in campus wide committees addressing those issues.

Meet with colleagues from other UC campuses and institutions, attend professional conferences, and stay abreast of best practices and literature in order to continuously improve academic support programs. Apply best practices to academic support programs.

As needed, develop and coordinate Academic Partnership Programs marketing and recruitment materials for academic support programs, in coordination with department wide marketing efforts.
Staff Supervision and Development 25
Direct the activities of 3-5 FTE staff (level 2 and 3 SAO, and SAO Sup'vr.) including hiring, assigning work, performance evaluations, initiating disciplinary and corrective actions when required, recommending annual merit increases and incentive programs, recommending reclassification as necessary, and resolving complaints/grievances; maintaining staffing budgets.

Organize and facilitate staff training and certification of skills competencies. Organize and facilitate in-service training, educational and professional development opportunities for professional and student staff. Refer to university services as needed.

Ensure that supervision and evaluation of AAII, SAO II, and contract staff are conducted effectively by Supervisors within the unit. Coordinate recruitment, hiring, training, work assignment, professional development, and corrective action, as necessary, of professional and student staff in the unit.

Participate in activities that relate to the Academic Resource Center as a whole, and assist all students, colleagues, and campus community members with a variety of needs associated with the Academic Resource Center's operations and programs as well as provide back up during peak periods, absences of co-workers, and/or filling in during a vacancy. As a member of the Academic Resource Center team, maintain up-to-date knowledge of the Academic Resource Center's programs to provide smooth operation during backup of assigned co-worker(s). Accept rotational assignments based on operational priorities, needs, and/or cross-training efforts.

Master's Degree from an accredited institution and five or more years of professional level or advanced professional level experience in higher education with demonstrated progressively responsible experience in student academic support services.
