Position Purpose

Assist in field surveys, laboratory experiments, and collecting data for disease monitoring purposes in identifying potential pathogens.

Essential Functions

Laboratory, Greenhouse and Lat-house duties 40
Laboratory part of this position requires preparation of media, general lab maintenance, assist in field surveys and laboratory experiments, isolations of fungal pathogens from field specimens and maintenance of culture collection, data entry, molecular diagnostics via DNA extractions and PCR, ability to do repetitive work.
Collecting data from field 40
Field studies includes assisting with the collection of data for disease monitoring purposes, collecting plant material, isolating tissues and identifying potential pathogens, and maintaining culture collections recovered from field specimens.
Monitoring greenhouse and Lathouse experiments 20
Monitoring greenhouse and Lathouse experiments including temperatures, irrigation and other environmental conditions. Duties will include the mixing of soils under sterile conditions, sterilizing planting pots, tools and other instruments.

Demonstrated basic computer skills. Familiarity with MS Word and Excel.

Experience with basic laboratory techniques and preparation of laboratory solutions and reagents.

Demonstrated capability with making isolations, subculturing fungi for long periods of time.

Knowledge of the use of standard laboratory equipment including Microscope, Rt-PCR, and Trimble Nomad Data collector.

Ability to follow detailed instruction.

Must be willing to work overtime as needed.

Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and one year of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

UC Riverside Plant Pathology & Microbiology Department is seeking a Laboratory Assistant I to assist with field surveys, laboratory experiments, and collecting data for disease monitoring purposes in identifying potential pathogens.
