Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the Police Lieutenant, the Sergeant is responsible for the supervision of Patrol Officers while maintaining the chain of command within the department. The Sergeant directs law enforcement operations in the field; manages the day to day activities of sworn police officers to ensure the adherence to policies and procedures, regulations, orders and laws; and provides leadership and supervision of a unit within the department by enforcing regulations and policies for assigned personnel. The Sergeant also inspects the work of subordinates, provides performance coaching and feedback during performance evaluations; implements training to meet professional development needs; and takes corrective action when necessary to protect the welfare of the employee, integrity of the department, and safety of the community. In the absence of a ranking officer, the Sergeant also assumes leadership command of the department, and performs patrol and collateral duties as required.

Plan, direct, and manage the assigned activities in the department by inspecting the work of subordinates, scheduling work priorities, and supervising the day to day work of assigned personnel, in accordance with policies and procedures

Assume leadership command of the department, in the absence of executive leadership, by initiating administrative and command leadership to fulfill a functional police responsibility; and providing functional supervision for employees not directly under the Sergeant's supervision

Ensure the adherence to policies and procedures, and the proper performance of assigned duties by enforcing the UCUPPAPM, regulations and policies; reporting violations of policies, procedures, regulations, orders, and laws; and taking corrective action, including relief or suspension of an officer or employee, as needed to protect the welfare of the employee, integrity of the department, and safety of the community

Implement the organizations talent and personnel development strategy by providing leadership and direction to employees; creating professional development and job training opportunities; completing annual performance evaluations of assigned personnel; and delivering developmental feedback to each employee regarding their performance

Support the division's long range planning process by assisting management with the development of UCPD departmental goals and objectives

Provide timely and appropriate public service to the campus and surrounding community by patrolling campus grounds, buildings, and facilities to investigate in progress or past crimes; and reviewing or writing crime and incident reports, making arrests, and testifying in court, to enforce local, state and federal law

Investigates suspicious circumstances, persons, and/or vehicles observed, to deter and detect criminal activity

Supports community goals and service standards by delivering community relations presentations
Collateral Duties 20
Develop community oriented policing and problem solving programs by completing and/or managing various special projects or programs (e.g. UNET Supervision, Investigations, Field Training Program, Recruiting, etc.)

Education and Experience: Candidates must be a non-probationary police officer and hold at minimum a Basic POST certificate

Knowledge of:

Current California police practices, protocols and procedures and the workings of the California criminal justice system

Local, state and federal laws applicable to the police function generally, and to the University of California police function specifically

Protocols for conducting both simple and complex crime scene investigations

Employee relations and other development and disciplinary practices

Composing, editing, and distributing correspondence, reports and other documents using business software

Delivering professional presentations

Possession of a POST Advanced and/or Supervisory Certificate (incentive pay of $325/month)

Experience managing personnel in a collective bargaining environment

Experience working in university or college law enforcement

Current employment as a California Peace Officer
