Position Purpose

The Student Advisor is a student-focused position that provides academic counseling for students enrolled in the postgraduate and J-1 academic training programs. In addition to advising, this position will assist with program coordination and analysis while providing outstanding customer service within a unique, fast-paced, environment.

Student Advising 55
Provides individualized counseling to all students within their assigned portfolio. Advises in-person, by phone, Skype, email, and social media. Serves as the main point of contact for all assigned matriculated students and answers all questions pertaining to the program and courses. Refers students to other offices and staff as needed.

Conducts information sessions to explain course selection and the enrollment process. Assess student enrollment requests and advises on appropriate course selection. Assembles all pertinent student information to include any specific degree requirements that must be met while at UCR and/or courses pre-articulated by partner institutions.

Closely monitors the progress of students through the programs. Tracks students who are not making sufficient progress and counsels students on strategies that will assist them in returning to good standing. Meets with students enrolled in intensive language classes prior to the start of their program, when applicable, in order to assess their progression and advise on appropriate preparation for their impending program.

When required, collects, reads, and evaluates monthly observation reports from students enrolled in programs remotely and provides timely feedback to the students. Visits the worksites of students in academic training programs to monitor students and confers with partner organizations on student progress.
Utilizes social networking as an enhancement to the advising process and utilizes this platform as one of the principal forms of communication when students are studying remotely. Monitors all social networking channels and provides generalized advice as needed.

When appropriate, provides information regarding the completion of graduation projects while at UCR. Checks in with students periodically to ensure they are making sufficient progress towards completion. Assists with providing feedback to students in preparation for final presentations and serves as a grader for final presentations.
Program Coordination and Analysis 35
Assists the program manager in developing and conducting orientations for incoming students in the postgraduate and J-1 academic training programs. Meets incoming students arriving at UCR and provides an initial welcome and information session, when applicable.

Coordinates all communication with the students within the department. Responsible for student enrollment for all terms they are in attendance at UCR. Works in close contact with the Program Manager, Extension campus enrollment coordinator, Student Services, IEP Enrollment Management and the IEP Finance department to ensure proper enrollment and routing of charges.

Responsible for reviewing student attendance, grades and progress through the programs. Recommends probationary status to the program manager and provides input on other academic actions. Tracks certificate completion for students, and facilitates the transcript process for partner schools. Coordinates student presentations and serves as one of the graders. Routes graduation project papers to appropriate readers, gathers all grading rubrics and calculates final marks. Responsible for ensuring partner schools receive all necessary documentation.

Other duties within classification as assigned to assist with the functions required of the Management and Technology department and International Education Programs

Maintains affiliations with professional associations to benefit students. Strives to remain current with industry trends, best practices and student development theory by taking advantage of professional development opportunities when available and approved.

Ability to communicate effectively and professionally using tact and diplomacy with internal and external campus community including international students and their families.
Must be able to perform responsibilities with great attention to detail, flexibility, professional acumen, and enthusiasm for international education.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively deliver information in a clear, concise and articulate manner.
Strong dedication to cultural awareness.
Demonstrated experience in a customer service environment.
Ability to work effectibely with tight deadlines, especially with the constant succession of inquiries from students, with the flexibility to respond to changing priorities and fluctuating workloads.
Extensive computer skills, including knowledge of current social media tools and trends such as Skype, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Facebook.
Ability to work independently. Skills in organizing work, defining tasks, prioritizing assignments and follow through.
Hired applicant must successfully pass a background check through the Department of Justice.
