Position Purpose

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Housing for Marketing, Housing, Dining & Residential Services (HDRS), the Media Communications Specialist manages the content of all HDRS websites and social media outlets. Working with other internal campus partners such as writers, designers, technical staff, external experts and a range of university clients, this position will update and maintain the department's digital assets, including websites, public-facing display screens (R'Talk), e-mail communication and social media.

This position serves all HDRS clients, including (but not limited to) Housing Administration; Residence Life; Dining Services; Resident Contracts & Outreach Services; and the Child Development Center units. The position works collaboratively with other UCR department marketing programs, including most prominently, VCSA-Communications.

The Media Communications Specialist will assist in the evaluation and research for projects related to effective marketing programs and processes; brand development, new media design, photography, and strategic planning. This position must have knowledge of, adhere to, and enforce University, and department policies, protocol and marketing trends.

SOCIAL MEDIA DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT 50
* Create, update and manage appropriate messaging for social media outlets including, but not limited to, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Tumblr and others, in a consistent and sustainable manner.

* Maintain an understanding of social media trends, updates and new systems on campus, throughout Higher Education and in the world at large.

* Maintain an appropriate and consistent image of HDRS on all social media outlets.

* Work closely with all HDRS departments to develop relationships and a flow of information to maintain current information or department changes on all social media outlets.

* Develop and carry out HDRS marketing campaign(s) on social media based on client or departmental need. Advertise special events, programs, outreach efforts and HDRS updates or alerts.

* Create, implement and manage a live social media presence during special HDRS and on-campus events; respond to student comments, concerns, questions, etc. in a manner consistent with HDRS and UCR policies and procedures.

* Track social media usage and gather performance metrics.

* Provide reports on social media outreach efforts and make recommendations to increase effectiveness of utilized social media outlets.

* Monitor communication commentary on websites outside the control of HDRS, including College Confidential, College Prowler, Yelp and others, to elucidate trends.

* Independently compose and post updates with timely written and visual material in keeping with overall HDRS and University brand guidelines and goals in a manner that appeals to and appropriately informs UCR and HDRS's target demographic: students, potential students and student families.

* Manage and create, when necessary, the content of all Housing, Dining & Residential Services websites and the HDRS Staff SharePoint Announcements, ensuring that all content is correct and up-to-date at all times.

* Actively work with HDRS Management Team to asses needs, define website content goals and design solutions in conjunction with appropriate campus partners (e.g. VCSA-TS, VCSA-Communications). Act as a liaison between HDRS and VCSA Strategic Communication Team.

* Work closely with all HDRS departments to develop relationships and a flow of information to maintain current content, upcoming programs, campaigns or department changes on all websites and appropriate SharePoint sites.

* Effectively and efficiently manage website updates, including design, content and graphic enhancements. Conduct website orientations, as needed, for various HDRS departments.

* Design graphics (static and animated) for use on websites and mobile applications. Convert video formats and optimize video assets for use on the website, emails or custom players.

* Use web analytical tools such as Google Analytics to develop reports on web statistics and make recommendations to optimize website usage.

* Work closely with clients and colleagues to determine design needs and/or creative options as they relate to web and social media management and maintenance.

* Maintain awareness of graphic design trends and developments, including advances in design software, display technology and media options.

* Resize, manipulate, enhance or edit graphic elements to optimize use on websites or social media outlets.

* Provide creative design feedback to increase effectiveness of website and/or social media use.

* Create and maintain job files, image data banks and portfolios for website and social media use.

HDRS employs 450 career employees and over 800 student employees. HDRS departments include Business & Financial Services, Capital Programs, Catering Services, Child Development, Conference Services, Contract & Outreach Services, Dining Services, Information Technologies, Marketing, Operations and Residential Life. HDRS reports to the Division of Student Affairs.
