Position Purpose

The Director of Study Abroad provides leadership and strategic direction for UC Riverside's study abroad efforts. The Director reports to the Assistant Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education and is responsible for developing policies, programs, and integrated services to advance opportunities for faculty and students to participate in study abroad programs and exchanges. The Director of Study Abroad will be responsible for the administrative and programmatic direction of all UC Riverside study abroad programs, including the UC Education Abroad Programs (EAP), Summer Study Abroad faculty-led short-term programs, and other programs delivered by third-party study abroad providers. The Director will lead, direct, and manage the implementation of international academic experiences for students and expand the number of students participating in education abroad opportunities. Improving diversity of study abroad population is another goal, consistent with the equity concerns of the campus and the Office of Undergraduate Education.

Provide leadership in developing a shared vision for study abroad at UC Riverside. Collaborate closely with academic colleges, departments, and Office of Undergraduate Education to: 1) create a broad-range of study abroad options; 2) ensure full academic integration of study abroad across all UC Riverside academic majors, and 3) implement strategies for maximizing the number of UC Riverside students abroad.

Oversee strategic planning for UCR Study Abroad Programs, and development of new programs and program models to meet the planning goals.

Articulate the goals and benefits of international education to all campus constituencies, and advocate for international education within the administration.

Collaborate with the Colleges, Student Affairs, and other campus units to develop policies and protocols designed to support student and faculty success.

Develop strategies with Financial Aid and Advancement Offices to increase student access to study abroad, including scholarships, financial aid, and endowments.

Assess matters of health, safety, and liability; and implement policies to address issues identified in the planning and administration of international programs.

Remain current on national best practices in study abroad, including research methodology on program and student outcomes related to academic success, time-to-degree, personal growth, intercultural competencies, and impact on career decisions.
Budget and Human Resources 25
Oversee the unit operating budget. Interpret and apply university policies to ensure appropriate use of funds.

Perform financial management for faculty-led study abroad programs. Provide support for faculty leaders in preparing budgets and itineraries, and minimizing both health and safety risks to program participants.

Develop contracts with overseas and local partners for study abroad programs (e.g., local and international transportation, accommodations, classroom space, field trips), in coordination with UE Business and UCR Purchasing offices.

Supervise Study Abroad full-time, career and contractual staff, and part-time student employees. Recruit, interview, select, train, and evaluate staff performance.
Program Development and Management 25
Develop, evaluate, and enhance study abroad programs, with the goal of consistently increasing the percentage of undergraduate students who have one or more international experiences.

Coordinate and successfully manage existing study abroad programs by working in partnership with program leaders, academic and administrative offices to ensure that the administration of the study abroad experience functions safely, efficiently and effectively.

Develop policies and procedures for study abroad programs, in particular for UCR faculty-led summer study abroad programs. Provide guidance to all faculty and staff involved in study abroad programs, including information sessions, pre-departure workshops, and re-entry activities.

Conduct faculty outreach to recruit and select faculty leaders for summer study abroad and UC EAP programs.

Manage crisis and emergency situations involving study abroad participants, collaborating closely with UCEAP, UCR campus police, Office of Undergraduate Education, colleges, and student affairs.

Develop and track program learning outcomes and quantitative measures to evaluate program effectiveness.

Oversee the development of internal and external promotional and branding initiatives, including web site, social media, signage, and other outlets.

Represent Study Abroad Office at Study Abroad Fairs, Visitations/Open House Events, New Student Orientation Programs, Parent Programs, and other meetings of student and professional groups.

Identify funding sources and develop grants and other funding initiatives.

Other duties as assigned.
Advising 10
Meet with faculty and students in order to provide study abroad information that addresses academic and personal goals. Participate in information sessions.

Promote best practices in study abroad curriculum design and assessment .

Respond to office inquiries from students, staff, faculty, and senior-level administrators.
