Conserve, oversee, and utilize departmental research, reference, and teaching collections; manage the museum outreach program; serve as Lab Safety Officer (LSO) and Departmental Safety Coordinator (DSC) for Earth Sciences.

MUSEUM COLLECTIONS CATALOGING AND MAINTENANCE 30
Oversee the organization of departmental museum collections of fossils, rocks. minerals. sediments. thin sections. slides, videos and manuscripts. Identify and arrange specimens according to established classifications. Assist students in preparation of specimens and curation of thesis collections. Conduct library and archival research on museum collections to enhance their usefulness. Conduct periodic inventories of collections and assess and correct maintenance issues. Maintain GEO 1, GEO 2, & GEO 3 lab collections; maintain GEO 116 structures collection; maintain GEO 118 sedimentary rocks lab samples.
MUSEUM DISPLAYS AND OUTREACH 25
Select specimens for public exhibit. Develop exhibits to enhance teaching and further public awareness of museum holdings and departmental research. Design, research and write exhibit text, and oversee construction and assembly of exhibits. Supervise student volunteers in maintenance of exhibits. Occasionally conduct museum tours and advise student volunteers assisting with outreach activities. Conduct occasional off-campus visits to schools and civic groups. Offer basic information on and identification of mineral, rock, and fossil specimens brought to the department by members of the public.

LABORATORY SAFETY OFFICER & DEPARTMENTAL SAFETY COORDINATOR 25
Serve as departmental Laboratory Safety Officer (LSO). Attend LSO meetings. Interface between department and Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to meet regulatory safety requirements. Write and update departmental Chemical Hygiene Plan annually. Assist Pis and laboratory personnel in meeting regulatory requirements for safety. Train students and faculty in the operation of inventoried, storeroom and audiovisual equipment; check out and check back in equipment used in teaching. Properly dispose of obsolete equipment. As Departmental Safety Coordinator (DSC) use EH&S template to update the Department Illness and Injury Prevention Plan (IIPP) and attend online DSC meetings as offered.
LOANS AND RECORDS 10
Assist faculty, outside scholars, and students in planning and designing research involving museum collections. Collaborate with TA's and faculty on class use of collections and collection development. Evaluate and approve or deny requests for loans of museum specimens by outside researchers and process loan documentation, delivery and return.

MUSEUM ACQUISITIONS 10
Evaluate needs for new acquisitions and acquire through purchase, fieldwork, donation or trade with other museums or collectors. Conduct fieldwork and/or supervise field parties to collect needed museum specimens. Evaluate and decide whether to accept offered donations of specimens, manuscripts or published literature. Secure by purchase or donation, equipment and supplies necessary for museum research, specimen preparation, display, documentation and curation. Restock bulk samples and supplies.

UC Riverside Earth Sciences Department seeks a Museum Scientist to conserve, oversee, and utilize departmental research, reference, and teaching collections; manage the museum outreach program, and serve as Lab Safety Officer (LSO) and Departmental Safety Coordinator. The position is 85% time with flexible Monday through Friday hours. Candidates seeking external research or outreach funding that may supplement salary while pursuing departmental goals are particularly encouraged to apply. The department, which is rapidly growing in faculty, is within the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, has strong specimen-based research in fault petrology, geochemistry, and paleontology. Such research complements departmental research foci in Organic and Paleoenvironmental Evolution, and Earthquake Processes (see http://cnas.ucr.edu/~earth/es.html/). We are looking for individuals with a strong background in specimen-based earth-life history research, familiarity with a broad range of geological materials, and an active interest in Museum Science. The new hire will engage with UCR's Center for Integrative Biological Collections, a rapidly evolving college-wide initiative. A Ph.D. is preferred, along with experience of and/or qualifications in collections management. This position requires driving so one will need to have a valid California Driver's License and will be added to the University DMV pull list for validation.
