Position Purpose

Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Development, the Director of Constituent Research & Development (CRD) provides strategic direction and management for UC Riverside's Office of Constituent Research & Development. The Research office has primary responsibility for (1) providing in-depth background information on a wide variety of constituents for use by the Chancellor, Vice Chancellors, Deans, faculty and members of the department of Development in pursuit of private funding for University initiatives and activities; and (2) initiating proactive research and data mining that will produce a pipeline of prospects for future cultivation and solicitation in support of UC Riverside. Incumbent is responsible for all aspects of the Research Office, including strategic direction and planning for work products and workloads, human resources, resource acquisition (both independently and in coordination with such entities as the University Resource Librarians), and coordination with all UC Riverside offices using the services of the Research office.
Through supervision of Research staff, the incumbent oversees the identification and evaluation of individual prospects and their affiliated organizations and pipeline development for UCR at all giving levels. Research Staff create written reports compiling and synthesizing in-depth research information on prospects and donors and provide analysis of and suggestions for suitable strategies for prospects in relation to the University's fund raising goals and initiatives. Incumbent serves on a variety of standing and ad hoc committees throughout the University, as required. This position is critical to the success of UCR's overall fund raising efforts, providing services to the entire general campus. By prioritizing and focusing the efforts of Development staff on discrete, well-defined pools of prospects, and by informing Development's and University administration's encounters with UCR's constituents, the Research office enables efficiency in fund raising and ensures UCR's institutional history through its relationship with its constituents.

-Develop strategies and innovations to identify new major gifts prospects for the University's fund raising efforts.

-Guide and assist development officers in building a "pipeline" of major gift prospects for unit-based and campus-wide fund raising.

-Coordinate and supervise the implementation of wealth screening and/or predictive modeling projects.

-Supervise the clearance process for prospects campus-wide; ensure that identified prospects are appropriately assigned to fundraisers and track results.

-Supervise the production of critical analyses of major gift prospects for senior administrators including the Chancellor, EVC and Provost, VCUA, AVC for Development and central and campus-based fundraisers. Develop unit standards and supervise providing assessments of giving capability and inclination, based on the interpretation and synthesis of myriad sources including federal government records (IRS, FEC, SEC), state government records (real estate, corporate, birth), industry publications, corporate records, annual reports, news, stock reports and foundation documents.

-Supervise the ranking of prospective donors and provide recommendations regarding their priority to senior administration and fundraisers campus-wide to maximize the efficiency of the campus-wide fund raising efforts.

-Supervise research and production of highly confidential background reports on potential major gift donors for use by senior administrative staff and fundraisers to maximize resources and cultivation efforts for campus-wide fund raising. Provide briefing reports to senior administration prior to cultivation events. Develop procedures and standards for the reports based on industry guidelines.

-Working with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Development, coordinates and staffs the Peer screening program. The program involves coordinating events with the highest level friends of the university, the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor for Advancement and other senior administration.

-Supervise the analysis of giving patterns and trends in database to predict giving, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of fund raising efforts. Conduct analyses of the Advancement database to identify new potential donors; develop and refine ranking systems to prioritize prospects.

-Continually seek new research techniques to identify new prospective donors using a variety of resources including wealth screenings, online subscriptions and databases, and the Internet. Supervise the ongoing training of staff in new research techniques.

-From an array of potential vendors, identify the best and most cost-effective sources for critical Advancement research information for use in finding and qualifying potential major gift prospects. Responsible for evaluating and determining which resources should be obtained, within the constraints of the department budget.

-Monitor Research office productivity and adjusts work load and research techniques as necessary to maintain stated turn-around time on work product.

Experience working in a higher education fundraising environment with the knowledge of the principles of external fundraising in higher education, donor relations, and of an academic institution's organization, structure, and function.

Proven significant experience in creating and guiding Research and Prospect Management strategies in support of a comprehensive or capital campaign in a higher education environment.
