Position Purpose

Working under the direction of the Director, Constituent and Research Development, the Senior Prospect Research Analyst supports the Development program by performing research functions in support of the Development staff's efforts to manage, identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift prospects.

Essential Functions

Research/Analysis/Evaluation 30
Analyze and assess information from local, national, and international print and online resources; subscription services; financial and philanthropy reports; references (both printed and electronic); other Internet resources; and University files.

Utilize quantitative criteria, including income, assets, liabilities, and giving patterns to evaluate each identified prospect's potential and propensity to give.

Identify, obtain, and interpret detailed financial and legal disclosures including corporate reports (10K, proxy statements), foundation tax reports (IRS 990-PF), and state, county, and court documents (corporate records, assessment records, probate cases).

Accessing complex state-of-the-art database services (WealthEngine, Lexis-Nexis, etc.), design effective search strategies based on variable database-specific search protocols to identify corporate, foundation, and individual major gift prospects.

Employ data mining techniques to further efforts to identify the best major gift partners, target the best donors, and achieve the best return-on-investment.
Prospect Management 30
Work with development staff to maintain the prospect management system.
Proactively audit data and work with development staff to ensure correct entry.
Writing and Consultation 20
As a result of research and analysis, write documents (profiles, bios and project summaries) using style, grammar, and content appropriate to the specific audience.

Interpret and translate complex financial, legal and corporate language into easily comprehensible terms while adhering to University standards of discretion and confidentiality.

Extract and communicate key information which directs the cultivation and solicitation strategy.

Append prospect knowledge gleaned through research and analysis (e.g., ratings, interests, and relationships) appropriately to the Advancement database so that it is accessible to campus-wide fundraising staff to be used to develop future cultivation strategies.

As a liaison to a portfolio of development directors, consult with a diverse system of contacts on matters related to prospect identification and research analysis that are used to form prospect cultivation and solicitation strategies.
Major Gift Prospect Identification 20
Identify sources of major gift ($25,000+) private support for fundraising initiatives.

Recommend strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major gifts.

Advise development officers of interdisciplinary campus relationships, interests, capacity and other areas which influence or impact cultivation and solicitation strategies.

Serve as a member of Prospect Meetings as required.

Minimum Requirements

Three to five years of experience in prospect research, development, library research or related field preferably in an academic environment. Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
