Position Purpose

The Director of Development (DoD) at the UC Riverside School of Business Administration (SoBA) serves as a front line major gift officer and promotes the university's fundraising priorities and image to alumni, business professionals, community leaders, parents, and friends of the university.

Under the direction of the Assistant Dean for External Relations, UCR School of Business Administration, the DoD is responsible for the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospective donors who have capacity to make major and principal philanthropic gifts.

This position is field-oriented and requires significant direct contact with prospects and donors. The DoD will travel frequently in the Inland Southern California region and will also be assigned an additional regional area to cover. This is a two-year renewable contract position which includes the same employee benefits afforded career employees.


Essential Functions

Fundraising 80
Manage a portfolio of 120 prospects and qualify, cultivate, and solicit major gift donors from this prospect pool. Over time, actively manage the prospect pool to consist of 30% qualification, 30% cultivation, 30% solicitation, and 10% stewardship prospects.

Generate 100 - 120 visits per year with assigned prospects (75% unique and new).

Generate 10 - 12 major gift solicitations per year (average size $100k)

Actively identify and qualify new prospects and existing donors through phone calls, email, visits, events, and university activities to meet fundraising goals.

Collaborate with development staff, faculty, program directors, other university administrators, and volunteers to identify, qualify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors.

Create written proposals and case statements for solicitation of individuals and organizations. Coordinate clearance with the Assistant Dean of External Relations and Dean of SoBA.

Direct the organization, planning and implementation of volunteer committees or groups as may be appropriate and necessary to meet established fund raising objectives.

Enlist the involvement of the faculty, Deans and other senior UCR administrators in their contact with volunteers and prospective donors.

In collaboration with the Assistant Dean of External Relations, direct the planning of strategies and tactics for donor solicitation by appropriate volunteers and academic leaders.

Develop detailed gift opportunities tailored to the interest of potential major donors consistent with established needs and priorities of SoBA.

Prepare written proposals and/or other special materials for use during donor cultivation and solicitation.

Devise and participate in the implementation of methods for recognizing and maintaining regular contact with past donors. Encourage the active participation of major donors and volunteers to ensure their constant awareness of current needs and objectives.

Maintain accurate records of donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship through database entry and electronic files.

Manage special projects related to fundraising strategy and operations.

Attend weekly departmental meetings.

Responsible for the effective and efficient organization and management of professional staff, which includes: Recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate staff. Manage performance of staff by establishing standards and goals that effectively measure performance. Review staff job responsibilities and reassign duties as necessary.

Posted Minimum Requirements
-Education and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in a related field.

-Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of major gift fund raising, preferably within a major research university environment.

-Understanding of academic, research and education functions and operation principles of a major research university.

-Experience and skill in directing a complex development program within a major university.

-Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, design and implement a development program. Ability to direct the design of strategies for cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors.

-Demonstrated ability to work effectively with deans and directors, academic and University leaders and volunteers to achieve fund raising goals.

-Ability to work effectively with other advancement staff in devising, analyzing, modifying, implementing, and evaluating development programs.

-Skill in communicating persuasively, both orally and in writing, about private gift fund raising in general and in particular as it applies to UCR.

-Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence and motivation with the proven ability to persuade colleagues and donor prospects, while maintaining confidentiality in all matters as they relate to sensitive donor relations issues.
