Position Purpose

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Foundation Relations (Development unit), the Director of Foundation Relations: aligns fundraising activities with the vision, goals and priorities of the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement. Incumbent will provide high-level support and counsel, manage prospects, work with central development colleagues on partner strategy, and serve as liaison with appropriate campus departments (colleges, schools, university libraries, student affairs, extension, etc.) to grant-making foundations and relevant government agencies. The responsibilities of the Director of Foundation Relations will be in support of programs across the campus, focusing more closely on assigned units under the direction of the Executive Director. The Director for Foundation Relations is also expected to be visible within the UCR academic and development communities. This is a two-year, renewable contract position which includes the same employee benefits afforded career employees.

Cultivation/Solicitation 75
Facilitates and manages high level external relationships with grant-making foundations and governmental agencies consistent with the vision and priorities of the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement.

Collaborates on campus development effort in the area of foundation relations in assigned areas. Leads and supports faculty in the process of grant-writing, budget preparation, proposal submission, and stewardship reporting.

Works closely with deans, faculty, and administration to develop funding opportunities for UCR programs from private grant-making organizations

Collaboratively develops and implements initiatives for the campus around the cultivation and solicitation of major foundations.

Assists the Executive Director, Vice Chancellor of University Advancement and other senior leadership in developing and implementing policies, objectives, and goals for the campus-wide development effort with grant-making foundations.
Counsel/Coordination 15
Provides counsel to the deans/directors and college/school/program-based development directors in the cultivation and solicitation of foundations.

Frequently work closely with various faculty and senior campus administrators, especially the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, and the deans to develop opportunities and proposals for private support.

Works with the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, Associate Vice Chancellor and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Development and the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development to develop and coordinate targeted campaigns for the campus in alignment with the UCR 2020 document and strategic faculty cluster hiring plans, including designated high priorities for research.

Serves as a member of comprehensive campaign planning and implementation committees, as assigned.

Manages a portfolio of high-level foundation prospects with campus interests.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a related field.

Four to six years of experience in fundraising or research administration, preferably in higher education. Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of major gift fundraising, preferably within a major research university environment.

Demonstrated knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for comprehensive fund-granting agency engagement strategies with research universities.

Proven experience in the full spectrum of development including cultivation, stewardship and donor recognition. Ability to direct the design of strategies for cultivation and solicitation of prospective partner organizations.

Strong sense of ethical conduct that will inspire confidence and motivation with the proven ability to persuade colleagues and donor prospects, while maintaining confidentiality in all matters as they relate to sensitive donor relations issues.

Skill in communicating effectively and persuasively, both orally and in writing, about partnerships with universities in general and in particular as it applies to UCR. Demonstrated exceptional writing ability is required, especially as it pertains to writing competitive peer-reviewed grant proposals.
