Position Purpose

The Speech Pathologist is responsible for speech therapy patient service delivery including evaluation and treatment of routine and complex patients. Responsibilities include evaluating patients with speech, language/cognitive, swallowing or voice disorders, completing appropriate documentation/reports and developing and implementing appropriate treatment goals. Performs services that may include modified barium swallow studies. Performs other related duties. Completes required documentation and communicates patient information across the continuum of care. Participates in training and program development and represents the department to the medical and general community.

The position's primary work location will be at the UCR Health Clinic in Orange County and may be asked to work in affiliate facilities in Riverside. In this per diem capacity, it is expected this position be scheduled 4 to 8 hour shift once a week and may include Saturday shifts. The hours may increase as the clinic grows.

Please Note: The classification title and salary range for this position are currently under review. The candidate will be placed at a flat rate per/hr in accordance with the methodology as defined in the collective bargaining agreement. The proposed title code for this position is covered under the Residual Patient Care Professional Unit Contract (HX).

Evaluate, diagnose and/or treat speech and language impairments such as articulatory disorders, stuttering, voice problems, delayed speech, organic disorders including cleft palate, cerebral palsy, aphasia, and speech and language disorders resulting from impaired hearing.

Complete appropriate documentation/reports on diagnostic findings, therapy used, and progress made.

Counsels patients and families concerning social and psychological problems associated with speech disabilities.

Refer clients to additional medical or educational services if needed.

Consult with and advise educators or medical staff on speech or hearing topics such as communication strategies and speech and language stimulation.

Participate in conferences or training, or publish research results, to share knowledge of new hearing or speech disorder treatment methods or technologies.

Conduct or direct research on speech or hearing topics, and report findings for use in developing procedures, technologies, or treatments.

Perform and Score SSI-4, Subjective Stuttering Scale and OASES scales.

Minimum Requirements

Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) license issued by the State of California.

Basic Arrhythmia Recognition Training (BART) or Basic Life Support (BLS) at time of hire with commitment to get BART w/in 6 months of hire date.

Up to two (2) years of experience as a licensed speech pathologist. Specialty Expertise in Fluency and the Treatment/Assessment of Stuttering in children, adolescents and adults. Expertise in augmenting treatment of stuttering with self-help therapies and in working with physicians in the medical management of stuttering.

Certificate of clinical competence in speech pathology awarded by the American Speech and Hearing Association.

Ability to competently and independently assess and treat complex patients with swallowing, communication, and cognitive disorders.

Candidate needs to be sufficiently computer literate to efficiently document using word processing programs and the electronic medical record.

Advanced communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with staff and patients from diverse ethnic/racial backgrounds, educational levels, sexual orientations and identities.

Ability to stay abreast of new medical knowledge, and to maintain and increase expertise and skills as relevant to clinical practice.
