Position Purpose

Under supervision, perform one or more standard repetitive laboratory and/or field experimental procedures that require technical scientific knowledge, following all safety standards in a teaching or research laboratory. Assist PI with the execution of various laboratory procedures and the performance of ongoing associated research projects in the Kaul lab. The responsibilities include maintaining stocks of solutions and reagents necessary for cell culture and general lab use; RNA extraction and RT-PCR; and Western Blotting, and conducting major parts of an independent research project. The applicant should be comfortable with handling, breeding & genotyping of animals, including timed matings and oral gavage.

Essential Functions

Maintain animal colony and assist with experiments 70
- Organize and keep laboratory animal colony.
- Assist with DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, and other diagnostic assays.
- Assist with data analysis and database updates as needed for the operations of the laboratory.
- Assist with laboratory experiments using a variety of genetic, molecular and biochemical approaches, incl. DNA and RNA extraction and PCR/RT-PCR.
- Immunochemistry and histology
- Handling, breeding and genotyping of animals.
- Perform in vivo procedures, including but not limited to, oral gavage, IP injections and submandibular bleeds, and pharmacokinetic studies.
- Harvest organs from animals.
- Culture primary human and rodent cells and cell lines.
- Maintain, freeze, thaw cell lines.
- Transfect cells with DNA plasmids or transduce with lentiviral vectors.
Data collection and record keeping 15
- Assist in data collection and accurate record keeping.
- Assist with University laboratory safety audits.
- Keeping track of the mouse colony and writing Animal Use Protocols/Forms for future experiments conducted by lab members
Lab maintenance 15
- Preparation of basic solutions and reagents.
- Assist in keeping a clean and safe working environment in accord with Environmental Health and Safety guidelines.
- Maintain, order and store laboratory supplies and equipment.

Minimum Requirements

College-level coursework in biological science, chemistry, physics or related area.

Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
