Must be able to work Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. Must be able to work flexible hours for staffing in backup situations - days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Hours may vary from quarter to quarter. Must be able to clear a background investigation as required by state law and University regulations.

Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the Head of Collection Maintenance, the incumbent in this position is responsible for searching for materials patrons are unable to locate, advising them of search results, and referring them to other library departments when appropriate; performs work independently and uses paraprofessional and advanced operational and technical skills involving a general knowledge of library practices and procedures; assists in hiring, training, scheduling and evaluating student assistants; assists in directing student assistants in maintaining an efficient workflow for the Collection Maintenance Unit; responsible for providing assistance and administering public service functions and transactions to a wide variety of patrons at the Circulation/Reserves Desk on a regular basis.

The incumbent's primary responsibilities and tasks will be at the Rivera Library, but may be assigned hours in Access Services at the Orbach Library.

Maintains current knowledge of all Collection Maintenance procedures and policies.

Maintains knowledge of Library of Congress, Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs), and WRCA classification systems.

Performs general and specialized search procedures for items not found in the stacks. Uses the integrated library management system (Alma) to update and track items through all stages of the search process. Uses Alma and other online resources (Primo, SRLF website, etc.) to search for items.

Monitors Stacks areas and makes recommendations for workflow. Assists in maintaining shelves in excellent order. Ensures accuracy of shelving end panels (range markers).

Assists in maintaining and processing statistics. Gathers and compiles statistics for special projects.

Assists in organizing and maintaining the accuracy of items in the stacks. This includes assisting with maintenance and creation of item records.

May be responsible for communicating with outside entities such as Tricor or Inter-Library Loan (ILL) staff at other UC campuses regarding shipment schedules, deliveries, or supplies.

Assists in performing general Collection Maintenance functions, such as paging material for UCR patrons and ILL requests, processing incoming and outgoing ILL materials, and assisting with shelving, shifting, and shelf reading.

Assists in maintaining a goal of a 72 hour turnaround shelving time.

Provides public service assistance.

Responsible for routing items in need of repair to appropriate staff.

Assists in processing problem items, such as items without item records, incorrect information in item records, repair, or items in need of new labels.

Interprets bibliographic records and sends items with complex bibliographic errors to appropriate unit for correction.

Responsible for shelving of other materials such as WRCA, Government Publications, Media, Education, and Reference materials.

Participates and assists in planning unit projects, such as collection measurement, record clean-ups, and shifting.

Assists with overseeing of student employees, including training on all Collection Maintenance policies and tasks, assigning tasks, updating schedule changes on the student calendar, and minor discipline issues. Reports problems to Unit Head.

Monitors accuracy of student assistants' work and checks for completion of assignments.

Monitors student assistants on safety issues while working.

May be required to perform work at any campus library and travel between libraries on a regular basis.
Access Services Duties 15
Staffs the Circulation Desk as scheduled. May be scheduled to cover the Circulation Desk at any campus library.

Maintains current knowledge of all Circulation Desk functions and procedures and performs these duties accurately.

Promptly assists all patrons at the Circulation Desk and provides accurate and courteous service according to Access Services Public Service Guidelines.

Maintains general knowledge of the UCR Library and campus in order to answer patron questions and assure the proper referral of patrons.

Uses the library ILMS and campus student/staff account database (ex. Banner) to determine the status of, or information about, patrons.

Maintains confidentiality of records as required by Library and University policy.

Operates building alarm and PA system and reports and correct problems associated with their use.

Accurately logs Access Services statistics on appropriate forms.

Writes and distributes Security Reports as required.
General Department and Library Responsibilities 5
Special projects may be assigned by the Unit Head, or by the Access Services Department Head.

Participates in staff meetings and committees.

Serves as Building Emergency Staff for the Rivera Library, responding to emergency situations in accordance with established procedures. Serves as an Alt-Building Supervisor for Emergency Conditions if a BSEC is unavailable. Interprets and is able to carry out library and campus-wide safety/emergency policies and procedures should the need occur. Reports safety and security hazards to the Unit Head.

Acts as backup staff member in emergency staffing situations. Hours may vary according to the hours the Library is open.

Monitors relevant mailing lists, department blog and other formal communication mechanisms.

Other duties as assigned.
