Position Purpose

Under general supervision, incumbents independently perform a broad range of ultrasound procedures in a women's health clinic utilizing various modes of equipment operation. Incumbents evaluate scans and determine the course of a study to insure that physicians are provided with optimal studies for diagnosis. Incumbents may assist with the training of Ultrasound Technologists; and may demonstrate ultrasonic procedures and equipment to other medical staff members.

Qualified candidates will be responsible for performing low and high risk perinatal Obstetric (OB) echocardiographic examinations in accordance with established departmental guidelines and protocols. Candidates should have special interest and expertise in prenatal diagnosis and OB ultrasound with the ability to recognize normal and pathological conditions and apply additional modalities as indicated (i.e. Doppler, 3D/4D). Candidate should obtain relevant history via EMR, image according to protocol, review cases with the care team, and generate preliminary reports. Familiarity in recognizing and troubleshooting various imaging IT issues is required. Candidate may perform other duties, as assigned

The position's primary work location will be in the inland empire working in the UCR Health Clinic and in affiliate facilities. As a per diem position, it is expected that this position will work 16 to 32 hours per month primarily between Monday and Friday 8am to 5pm, however on occasion there may be a requirement to be on call and work different shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

1. Ability to work with minimum supervision to produce diagnostic images of the human anatomy utilizing both stationary and portable ultrasound equipment.

2. Perform various types of ultrasound exams according to departmental protocol. Review Radiology request for appropriateness. Coordinate exams with other services as needed.

3. Explain the echocardiographic procedure to patients and answer any questions they may have. Spread the ultrasound gel on the surface of the patient's body covering the internal area being imaged.

4. Maintain ultrasound equipment and sterilize the room in which the procedure takes place. Practice sterile techniques maintain aseptic conditions and use universal precautions at all times.

5. Perform the ultrasound ensuring the transducer (probe) is capturing images of every angle/section that must be assessed.

6. Assists with technical echocardiographic training.

7. Evaluate the images for their quality, but also to interpret what was captured in the image. Present images, clinical information, and preliminary findings to physicians and the healthcare team.

8. Maintain patient records and add medical notes related to the ultrasound procedure.

9. Initiate and respond to emergent situations.

10. Demonstrates a service philosophy in all interactions with patients, families, and all members of the health care team.

11. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of computers and telecommunication modalities to document, track and convey information.

12. Completes charge encounters for physician approval.

13. Record patient images via appropriate archival media, transfer images as needed. Print images onto appropriate media.

14. Maintain departmental standards related to Quality Assurance controls.

15. Monitor patient's comfort while in the ultrasound department.
Equipment and Supplies 10
1. Accepts responsibility for daily operational maintenance of the Fetal Echo Lab supplies and equipment.

2. Inspect all devices for damage and ensure they are operating within accepted parameters. Ensure Radiology requisitions are properly completed. Initiate proper requests for required maintenance or repair of equipment.

3. Maintain accurate record of all supplies used and initiate orders to maintain supply par levels.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirement Display Ranking

Five years experience as a fetal echo sonographer required.

RDCS certification from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, RCS certification from Cardiovascular Credentialing International, or RCCS certification from Cardiovascular Credentialing International.

Knowledge of: echocardiographic procedures and exams, fetal situs and positioning, umbilical artery / venous flow patterns, ductus venous flow patterns, fetal arrhythmia, how to measure atrial / ventricular mechanical contractions, complex cardiac lesions, extracardiac defects associated with CHD, and multiple gestation.

Basic Arrhythmia Recognition Training (BART) or Basic Life Support (BLS).

Basic computer skills: EMR, ultrasound reporting, and PACS. Ability to operate PACS and RIS and other image / data recording systems. The ability to operate expertly the ultrasound equipment with specialized Cardiology software and a desktop computer.
