Tractors and equipment such as: backhoe, loader, bobcat, forklift, trencher, auger, small – large wheel tractor, disks. Various spray equipment (mounted, speed, vertical & horizontal boom), truck, ATV, mowers, chainsaws & handsaws, loppers, wrenches, hand tools.

Position Purpose

Under general supervision, provide skills necessary to support the UC Riverside Community Garden, R'garden Projects in the department of Agricultural Operations, specifically in cultural practices in row crops, aid in land preparation, open field management, and equipment set up and adjustment. Assist in pest control and tree care areas such as mechanized tree skirting, fruit sweeping operations, etc.

Row Crop, Fruit Tree Care and Cultural Practices 60
1. Under general supervision, assists with the citrus fruit operations and maintenance.
2. Under general supervision, performs tree care practices including planting, staking, and wrapping trees, vines and shrubs, pruning and suckering trees using saws and loppers. Applies fertilizer using tractors, fertilizer spreaders, and injection.
3. Assists in land preparation, transplanting crops, thinning and hand weeding research plots.
4. Maintains written records of operations including location, acreage, date, labor, and equipment hours.
Pest Control 25
1. Under general supervision, mix and apply pre-emergent herbicides using specialized spray equipment. This may include herbicides that are contact, systemic, and/or restricted materials for weed control. Mix and apply pesticides to orchards, row crops, nursery crops, and/or other agricultural crops using various spray equipment.
2. Applies nutritional sprays and/or pesticides to control insects or plant pathogens in orchards using medium and/or non-complex equipment such as tractors, mounted sprayer, speed sprayer, vertical and horizontal boom sprayers.
3. Under supervision, assists in calibrating sprayers and fertilizer spreaders.
4. Helps apply rodenticides to control gophers, ground squirrels and other rodents using traps, gopher guns and rodent bait stations. Assists with snail control by hand or machine spreaders.
5. Reads, and understands the various pesticide labels for pesticides used in the control of pests with special attention on the proper use of protective clothing and equipment required in the application of these materials.
6. Keeps accurate records of materials applied for required monthly reports and field research histories.
Other Duties As Assigned 15
1. Serve as back-up.
2. Operates farm equipment to perform functions such as: disking, mowing, tree removal, smooth and water roads, establishing drainage for water management, install irrigation pipelines.
3. Removes brush and trash from orchards, roadways, and fence lines keeping orchards and research facilities clean and roadways clear.
4. Performs other duties as assigned.

Three years of agricultural experience with a demonstrated ability to operate light to medium and/or non- complex agricultural equipment; sprayers, and trenchers; and the experience and knowledge to successfully perform the duties assigned to the position.

Ability to read, write and speak English; perform basic arithmetic calculations.

Knowledge of pesticide application and safety procedures. Under supervision prepares and applies various chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers.

Demonstrated experience and ability to operate and conduct routine maintenance on pesticide application equipment. Knowledge in safety operations and regulations.

Ability to maintain operational records such as records for cultural care operations and materials applied to plots.

Experience/ability to work in an outside environment during inclement weather and temperature extremes (above 100 F); moving of materials up to 40 pounds daily.

Ability to pass a respirator fit test and ability to wear and use air purifying respirator during chemical applications when required by law.
