Position Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Binder laboratory manager, perform a broad range of general laboratory duties and assist with laboratory experimental procedures using a variety of genetic, molecular and biochemical approaches. Responsibilities include, but not limited to, maintaining stocks of solutions and reagents necessary for general lab use, immunohistochemistry analysis, Western Blot analysis, and handling, breeding and weaning of mice and rats.

Molecular Biology and rodent colony maintenance 70
Assist with rodent colony maintenance by weaning, breeding and euthanizing.
Collect tissue samples for genotyping.
Assist with rodent stereotactic neurosurgical procedures.
Perfuse, dissect and harvest organs for analysis.
Perform Western Blotting and protein expression analysis.
Prepare tissue samples for histology and section using a cryostat.
Perform immunohistochemistry staining and microscopy.
Administer medication to rodents.
Present experimental results during lab meetings.
Lab maintenance 20
Organize and keep laboratory clean.
Prepare basic stock solutions and reagents.
Wash lab glassware and surgical instruments.
Autoclave and dispose of biohazardous waste.
Assist in maintaining a clean and safe working environment in accordance with Environmental Health and Safety guidelines.
Maintain and store laboratory supplies and equipment.
Receive and unpack shipments of laboratory supplies.
Clean animal housing areas and cages.
Data collection and record keeping 10
Assist in data collection and accurate record keeping.
Assist with accurate inventory of lab supplies.
Assist with University laboratory safety audits.
Assist with data analysis using Matlab and Prism.
Assist with creating data presentations and figures using PowerPoint.
Assist with database updates as needed for the operations of the laboratory.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirement Display Ranking

Graduation from high school or a GED and 2 years of laboratory experience or 2 years of college including courses in biological science, chemistry, physics or related area and 1 year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated experience in using and maintaining laboratory equipment, including but not limited to pipettes, centrifuges and balances.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Strong communication skills (verbal and written) in order to interact professionally and effectively with faculty, staff and students.

Ability to calculate the molarity of solutions, perform dilutions and make solutions following protocols.
  5
Ability to perform molecular biology experiments and to keep accurate documentation of all laboratory experiments.

Willingness to perform experiments involving handling, anesthesia, surgery, dissection and sacrifice of laboratory mice and rats. Willingness and ability to work safely with biohazardous and radioactive materials.

Demonstrated computer skills and experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Excellent organizational skills and the ability to organize and maintain a clean laboratory.

Willingness and demonstrated ability to meet established standards for dependability and attendance. Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends as needed.
