Position Purpose

Under general direction, the Physician Specialist practices medicine in an outpatient psychiatry office. Diagnose and treat illness; completes examinations; counsels and instructs patients; instructs and educates trainees and/ or staff; and may assist in public relations efforts.

This is a Per Diem appointment. Per Diem Physician Specialists are hourly paid appointees whose primary purpose is clinical service. These appointments have a variable schedule and cannot exceed 43%. These appointments may be on a pre-scheduled basis or as needed on a day-to-day basis as determined by the University.

The salary for this position is commensurate with experience and area of specialty. The successful candidates will be placed on the appropriate salary range based on years of experience ranging from the hourly rate of $95.00 - $144.97.

Essential Functions

Specialty Patient Care 80
Physician Specialists engage in specialty direct patient care activities and medical/clinical practice as the principal component of his/her overall professional responsibility.

Patient care activities will include, but are not be limited to:

1. Assessment, evaluation, diagnostic determination, on-going treatment and clinical management, necessary referral for consultation, care planning and modification, medications/therapeutic orders, transfer authorization, risk assessment, and, when appropriate, determination of readiness and planning for discharge.

2. Extensive and on-going communications with community primary care physicians who routinely manage the care of patients.

3. Day-to-day patient contact/rounding/care management that actively encourages and includes professional input from all members of the patient care team.

4. Accurate and timely completion of all clinical and professional records and documentation to assure compliance with local, state and federal regulatory, licensure and accreditation requirements.

5. Instruct residents, interns, and students in a designated specialized medical service.

Direct contact and consultation with patient family members, advocates, and others to ensure effective communication of patient status and care plans, and to encourage/support an open visitor-friendly environment within the medical/hospital environment.

Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the California Medical Board.

Board-Certification as determined by the American Board of Medical Specialties. At least one year of practice exclusive of internship / residency.

Maintenance of California Medical License, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) prescribing number, and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Must meet UC credentialing requirements.

Strong background and skills in clinical practice, clinical teaching, and managed care.

Advanced communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work effectively with staff and patients from diverse ethnic/racial backgrounds, educational levels, sexual orientations and identities.

Ability to stay abreast of new medical knowledge, and to maintain and increase expertise and skills as relevant to clinical practice.
