The Media Communications Specialist manages the content of all HDRS websites and social media outlets. Working with other internal campus partners such as writers, designers, technical staff, external experts and a range of university clients, this position will update and maintain the departments digital assets, including websites, public-facing display screens (RTalk), e-mail communication and social media.

This position serves all HDRS clients, including (but not limited to) Housing Administration; Residence Life; Dining Services; Resident Contracts & Outreach Services; and the Child Development Center units. The position works collaboratively with other UCR department marketing programs, including most prominently, VCSA-Communications.

The Media Communications Specialist will assist in the evaluation and research for projects related to effective marketing programs and processes; brand development, new media design, photography and strategic planning. This position must have knowledge of, adhere to, and enforce University and department policies, protocol and marketing trends.

UCR Housing, Dining & Residential Services (HDRS) is one of the campus' largest units, providing housing to about 30% of our students, dining for entire campus in residential and retail facilities, programming and support through a robust residential life program, conferencing and catering services and child development care to our faculty, staff and students. HDRS employs 450 career employees and over 800 student employees. HDRS departments include Business & Financial Services, Capital Programs, Catering Services, Child Development, Conference Services, Contract & Outreach Services, Dining Services, Information Technologies, Marketing, Operations and Residential Life. HDRS reports to the Division of Student Affairs.

Minimum Requirements

1. Minimum of a four-year college degree and two years of work experience in graphic design, marketing and/or web design & development, or an equivalent combination of work experience and education.

2. Experience working on personal computers in both Mac and Microsoft platforms; demonstrated expertise with Adobe Creative Suite design software (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); extensive knowledge of graphic applications, web applications and interactive-development tools (e.g. Acrobat, Flash and HTML).

3. Understanding of and experience posting to social media sites including, but not limited to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Tumblr, Flickr and Pinterest.

4. Ability to work independently and as a part of a creative team. Must be able to accept creative suggestions and be willing to offer creative alternatives for work in progress. Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others and maintain them over time, and effectively communicate by telephone, in written form, e-mail or in person.

5. A strong sense of artistic style and creative flair. Demonstrated ability to write effectively and efficiently for the web. Must be able to communicate ideas visually, verbally and in writing.

6. Demonstrate knowledge of layout principles and aesthetic design concepts.

7. Thorough knowledge of printing process and related production activities, including file preparation and output, prepress and print requirements. Ability to understand and prepare digital files for offset or digital printing, or for use on digital media.

8. Ability to keep up-to-date technically, analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.

9. Must be able to work in a deadline-oriented environment; to display self-discipline to organize, plan and prioritze and meet goals given by deadlines. Must be able to handle multiple projects at the same time; maintaining high quality.

10. Hired applicant must pass a background check by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and possess a valid California Driver's License (will be on the DMV pull).

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience working with website Content Management Systems (such as WordPress), web authoring and development tools (such as Dreamweaver) and working knowledge of web coding schemes, including HTML5 and CCS.

2. Experience creating motion graphics, using such software as Adobe After Effects, Flash, Nuke, etc.

3. Demonstrated writing abilities, including (but not limited to) a personal blog or vlog, articles published on the web, or comments posted on websites.

4. Experience creating short videos; demonstrated video editing and videographic skills.

5. Experience as a photographer, including lighting, composition, retouching, photo-illustration, photo-manipulation and photo editing.

6. Proven experience with multiple browsers (Chrome, Safari, IE, Firefox) and operating systems (Windows, Mac OS, iOS and Android).

7. Understanding of UCR on-campus Housing facilities, programs, events and information.
