Assistant Farm Mechanic

Position Information

The department is looking to hire two qualified candidates for this position. Under supervision, the Assistant Farm Mechanics assist in the maintenance and repair of all types of trucks (light to heavy duty), tractors, agricultural farm equipment and implements. Incumbents typically lubricate designated parts of farm machinery; operate field service trucks for lubrication, refueling, and minor field repairs; dismount, repair and replace tires; make sheet metal repairs; weld and braze; operate metal lathes, drill presses, grinders, and other shop tools; and perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

1. A minimum of two years of experience in servicing and assisting in the maintenance and repair of farm machinery equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

2. Skills to assist with automotive, farm machinery, transmission, hydraulic maintenance and repair; welding and metal fabrication, including the use of hand and power tools. Skill in using standard automotive tools and equipment.

3. Knowledge of basic 12 or 24 volt electrical circuitry and safety regulations

4. Ability to operate a forklift

5. Ability to operate a service truck for routine repairs of equipment in the field.

6. Ability to prepare and maintain appropriate maintenance records by keeping records of all equipment, preventative maintenance service performed, and repairs completed.

7. Ability to read, write, and communicate in English; perform basic arithmetic calculations; and skills to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

8. Ability to work in extreme temperatures while wearing protective clothing; ability to move 50 lbs. on a daily basis; and work outdoors in a dusty environment.

9. Hired applicant must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's license for class of vehicle to be operated. Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Pull Notice System.

10. Hired applicant must successfully pass a background check through the Department of Justice.

Preferred Qualifications

1. A strong background in general farming knowledge.

2. Knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations and practices pertaining to the work performed. Knowledge and application of safety procedures working around equipment that may contain hazardous products.

3. Knowledge of computer systems and its applications.
